Week-in-Review: September 28 – October 2

This week was a little different from our normal…I feel like I’m writing that all the time! Perhaps I need to realize there really isn’t a “normal” when it comes to homeschooling, or life in general really. The beauty of homeschooling is that when regular life throws us some abnormal along the way we can bend and flex to accommodate with ease.

So what threw us off our normal this week?
Just a little something we like to call Global Focus Week!
International workers Raymond and Mary Ebbett joined us for 4 days, sharing about what God is doing in Spain. Twice a year we are blessed to hear about what is happening around the world within our denomination as well as in cooperation with other organizations on behalf of the gospel all around the world. Talk about a wonderful learning opportunity! In addition to hearing all about God’s work, they also brushed up on their geography, a bit of European history, and a few words of Spanish!
Since we were out late every evening and I know from previous experience that my girls will be super tired and have a harder time focusing. So we kept school focused on Bible and history knowing these are the most fun for them to do. They also completed several chapters in Life of Fred and continued in their books assigned for literature.
Heart of Dakota is so rich that even only using the history and Bible for the week we still had a full school week. Here are a few highlights…
Grace: Little Hearts for His Glory Unit 26
Grace has started reading some of her history on her own and her sisters also love reading with her. I’m sure this is part of being the littlest learner in the house and her observations of all that has gone on around her for as long as she can remember. She enjoyed learning about George Washington in her readings.
P1030389
This week she also enjoyed using a manipulative called a 100s board with tiles. We have a couple of very good friends who happen to be retired teachers and bless us with some wonderful treasures every now and then. This wonderful gem came with a great book with all sorts of activities for all elementary ages. And it came to us just as Grace began studying the patterns found in the 100s board.
Beth: Preparing Hearts for His Glory Unit 4 (1st half)
Rose is really enjoying this guide. She especially liked the book Life in the Great Ice Age. Half-pace has been perfect for her just as it was for her older sister. She has really gotten into drawing with Draw and Write Through History. I’ve also been excited that see almost overnight her print has become amazingly neater. She does not prefer cursive, but we are persevering and I hope to see this improving soon as well.
P1030385
Right now Beth is reading Diary of a Real Payne. This Christian fiction enthralled Rose when she read it a couple of years ago and Beth has been giggling her way through as well! I love when my girls recommend books to each other. It’s so fun to see them sharing their joy of reading together.
Rose: Creation to Christ Unit 21

Rose really loves her studies. Quite often she will work ahead without telling me because she loves what she is learning. We moved this week into the life of Christ. We use a different Bible from Master Books and I really like it even though some of the chapters are missing. When that happens she just reads from the actual text in Scripture.

P1030392
She really enjoyed getting back into Life of Fred this week. We used it consistently last year but had not added it back in since we started back full-schedule yet. I’m so grateful for that series as it helped her love math again!
Don’t forget to check out what else was happening in the Heart of Dakota world in other homes this past week!

Why We Teach: Heart of Dakota and Field Trips

One of the wonderful things about Heart of Dakota is it has given my girls a love of history. Throughout our studies we have opportunity to discuss the hard things of our nation’s past, like slavery. This week we had the opportunity to visit a historical plantation. The tour of the house was interesting, but I found the slave quarters more important. Both Bigger Hearts for His Glory and Preparing Hearts for His Glory address events which are sometimes difficult to approach except to explain that with sin in our world, there are many horrible things that happen. Slavery is one of those things and so we learn.. As I tell my girls each time they ask, we study history to know where we came from and to remember that which we do not wish to repeat.
P1030292

I think what surprised all of us the most was when our guide told us that these slave quarters were some of the most advanced and upscale of the time. This is hard to believe as we observe the sparse and still quite small rooms for the number of people living in them. It is a time in history we should always remember for several reasons. One is because many once defended slavery by twisting and contorting Scripture to mean something it didn’t. We see this happening in many churches today, defending that which God condemns.

P1030319

Secondly, this was a time in history when those who were vulnerable were criminalized for self-preservation. As slavery ended many more atrocities in our nations history began. Even now we are battling against the evil of racism that led to the founding and promotion of abortion clinics around the country. We observe the fallout of racial tensions around us daily. We can see where history has led…we can see the hand of the evil one upon our nation.

P1030320

And this…this…is why we teach.

There are many benefits and wonderful things which homeschooling affords us, but you can do this same teaching whether you traditional school or homeschool.  We feel the incredible burden to raise our daughters to see everything in the light of our Creator, that they would begin to realize and discern the battles of spiritual warfare, and that they would know how to fall to their knees to engaged in battle. The battles before us will not be won in an election or through legislation. We must pray as we never have before, always keeping at the forefront of our minds His sovereignty.
No matter how your children are schooled, make this your big-picture priority.

Week in Review: September 14-18

Last week was a week off for us as I prepared for the start of my literature and writing class. We also spent a few days with my sister-in-law and enjoyed seeing them over the Labor Day weekend. The rest of my week was filled with faculty meetings, introductory activities, and prep for my class. It was a good and busy week, but I’m really glad we took off from school!

This week was also a little different. We deviated a bit from Heart of Dakota, but still completed school this week. Monday was busy, busy busy! This year I’m teaching 10 really awesome 12-14 year-olds who are homeschooled. This is also where my girls take classes. Grace’s class meets two days a week so she goes with me on Mondays. This year I’m teaching 10 really awesome 12-14 year-olds who are homeschooled.
We began our regular school year back in August, but our tradition is to have our first-day-pictures at the start of our homeschool classes. Rather than a co-op type setting, our learning center is set up more like a private school. We have an administrator and the teachers are hired, not volunteers. We really like the structure and the girls even enjoy wearing uniforms!

My funny girls do a great job at pictures for me and I happily acquiesce when they request a silly one!

So in addition to beginning their science classes we also completed quite a few chapters in Life of Fred, read may chapters in a variety of books, completed a health lesson, and took a field trip!

Week in Review: August 1 – September 4

Next week I’ll be prepping for the class junior high English class I teach to junior high homeschoolers. This year I’m working really hard to be ahead on the many responsibilities I have.

I’ve been doing much better with our homeschool lesson plans. Everything is laid out and easy to follow in Heart of Dakota, but in order to track it all I need to have it laid out on a grid. I also have been much more consistent about inputting the girls assignments each morning into their homework app. This has been a huge help in the smooth start to our year. I’m planned ahead for both my English class and the moms ministry I lead at our church. I also have plans for my Christmas piano recital in the works. I still feel pressure as the year is under getting under way, but the stress is significantly less.

On to the girls’ week!
Rose: 5th Grade – Creation to Christ Unit 18

P1030065
We are starting the second half of the guide! Rose has grown so much from last year and I see how much she is continuing to enjoy school through Heart of Dakota. Now is the time of year I begin to look ahead to what is coming next. We’ll move on to Resurrection to Reformation sometime after Christmas. Right now I’m in the process of making a spreadsheet of all the books I will need and how much they would cost new. I’ll buy them up slowly over the next several months. This helps us keep from dishing out a large sum all at once as well as gives me the opportunity to shop around for bargain used books. I typically save about 50% off the total.
P1030063
Rose loves the notebooking pages. I really like the timeline in particular. I think it is highly meaningful for my kids to create their own timeline pictures. This method begins with Beyond so by the time we reach this guide it is just part of the week.
P1030034
Bible study with Heart of Dakota is genuinely meaningful. Yes, it is part of school, but it is meant to penetrate their hearts. God’s Word never goes forth without return. The long passages for Scripture memory are incredibly rewarding and beneficial. I am so happy with how Heart of Dakota lays out the Word of God.
P1030196
We finished up the History of the Ancient World this week and while Rose said she enjoyed it, she is very much looking forward to new books. She is very excited that we are beginning the life of Christ next!
Beth: 3rd Grade – Preparing Hearts Unit 3 (1st half)
  P1030036
So this is actually the painting project from the previous week which we didn’t get to. Our TV trays have provided an excellent way to paint and allow it to dry off to the side!
P1030052
This week’s research was about cave paintings. I have some wonderful resources from Master Books about our ancient ancestors. One of my favorites is The Genius of Ancient Man. It is such an interesting read! It is a big above Beth’s level, but provided some excellent examples of cave art in addition to what was shown in Life in the Great Ice Age. We avoid Wikipedia because of its unfortunate inaccuracies at times.
PicMonkey Collage
After studying about cave paintings Beth began creating her own. She’ll finish this project when we finish the unit.
P1030205
Rose took this sweet picture of us reading history together!
Grace: Kindergarten – Little Hearts for His Glory Unit 24
P1030219
This sweet girl is full of giggles during our reading time with Frog and Toad. She loves good humor and it’s fun to see her catch the witty narrative in these books. I remember reading and loving these books as a child as well. It’s so fun to share them with her!
P1030044
One of the weeks assignments was to create an island like New Amsterdam. She really likes these projects and I love giving her the freedom to create. I’m sad to say when we first started out homeschooling I didn’t do as good of a job at just letting my kids do what they do best: Create! I tended to micro manage and prefer to just skip some activities because of what I perceived as unnecessary. I’ve learned to be much less rigid in this way and it is for the better. Sometimes projects fail, but my girls never seem to mind. They enjoy the process of creation and do well to learn on their own without my interference!
P1030049
One of Grace’s jobs is to update the calendar each day. She takes this very seriously and does a great job at it!
P1030054
This week we learned about place value with tens and ones. I love this abacus I snagged at a yard sale for $1. I’m always on the lookout for things I can use and you never know what you might come across. This one came from Florida while we were visiting my husband’s parents. They have the best yard sales in South Florida!
Our week was really good and I did a much better job of snapping pictures of everyone! I’d love to hear how your week of homeschooling went!

Week in Review: August 24-28

Fall is almost here! Actually, we are already seeing leaves turning even though it is a bit early in NC to see this. I’m over-the-moon to see fall come! I appreciate all seasons now after living in Florida, but Autumn will always and forever be my favorite with winter/Christmas coming in at a close second.

Rose: 5th grade ~ Creation to Christ Unit 17
Like many homeschooling mamas before me I’m always concerned if I’m doing enough. Rose tends to get the brunt of this because she is my oldest and with her it is always new territory! As I discussed this years curriculum with my husband he did a great job of helping me think through what was necessary and what was fluff or overkill. One of those areas was vocabulary. I guess the traditional school mindset of a set of weekly vocabulary words was just stuck in this English teacher’s head. We have been using Vocabu-Lit for the last few years and I really liked it, but I realized my voracious readers don’t really need a formalized vocabulary system in addition to what Heart of Dakota does throughout the guides. So we’ve dropped that. Rose was disappointed at first, but I think she likes having one less assignment, especially since the reality last year was that she knew every word before we even did the lesson!
P1020939
Dictation continues to go well for her now. It took us a while to really get that, but she is progressing more quickly now. I do think All About Spelling has had a lot to do with helping her see spelling patterns more clearly, so we will continue through that entire program. She’s almost done with level 4 and we will soon move on to level 5.

P1020895
We seem to be hot or cold with math. She loves it, or hates it. Geometry has proven to be delightful for her and I anticipate beginning back with Life of Fred for supplement very soon.

History went well this week, I just forgot to take any pictures! History is never an issue with my girls. For them, that is the frosting on our homeschool curriculum cake. They love all of the books we read and tend to pursue history outside of our schooling as well. Although my husband and I both love history I really give most of the credit for this to our curriculum. Rich literature and engaging activities is what has drawn my girls to love learning about our past!

Beth: 3rd Grade ~ Preparing Hearts for His Glory Unit 2 (2nd half)

Beth is settling into our routine with this new guide. My goal is to have my girls independently reading the history by the end of the guide to prepare them as they move into Creation to Christ. This made the transition smooth as silk for Rose so I’m planning to take the same approach with Beth.

P1020909
Beth loves activities that are hands on. I really appreciate that even as the guides mature in learning there are still hands-on components. I was also pleased that she remembered all of the continents and where they were! This is something we have learned and reviewed since Little Hearts for His Glory. Seeing the progression and retention of something as simple as this helps me love Heart of Dakota even more.

P1020897
Timelines are a favorite in our house. While many other programs give pre-printed timeline pictures Heart of Dakota encourages students to draw and create. It doesn’t matter how advanced of an artist they are, just that they draw a meaningful representation of the picture idea given. This week Beth drew Noah’s ark and it was neat to see how she drew it much like the Draw and Write Through History book showed, which is much more accurate than many traditional drawings.

Just like her older sister, history is the icing. She has loved reading about the Ice Age and is anxious to get back to Grandpa’s Box soon!

Grace: Kindergarten ~ Little Hearts for His Glory Unit 23
Grace has so much energy! This girl dances everywhere she goes. She has so much joy for life and that translates into her learning as well. Usually, no matter what we are doing, her response is, “Math? Goodie!” or “Handwriting? Yay!”

P1020921P1020925
This week we learned about the Pilgrims and she really enjoyed the activities. On this one she scooted along the floor pretending she was on the Mayflower and then landed on Plymouth Rock, which was supposed to be a pillow, but she wanted to use a real rock from her ever growing rock collection.

P1020948

First math test….drum roll…100%!!! Grace still just gets effort based grades from me since she is technically in Kindergarten, but since she is working on 1st grade math I want her to get used to seeing it graded. She loves math and I really like how Math Mammoth lays out the teaching. All three girls are thriving with this which is pretty amazing considering they have very different learning styles.

Learning Together

PicMonkey Collage

We are doing more “together” learning this year. Since we don’t utilize Heart of Dakota science after Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory we are going to do that together throughout the year as we have time. We are also going through a sweet little health course from Rod and Staff. It is very traditional and I personally love it. Not to mention it is a great price! All three girls are participating and it was a fun first unit. Even though it is graded for 2nd grade it didn’t feel too old for Grace or too young for Rose. it will be a great fit I think and they seemed to really like it. My girls don’t typically balk at our schooling except for the amount. Every once in a while they feel I give them too much, but that hasn’t come up yet this year.

Weekly Review: August 17-21

We had a pretty average week across the board. I started teaching piano lessons full time and we began our schedule as if the girls were already taking their classes at our local homeschool learning schedule. I will feel more comfortable if we can practice this and this week went quite well. The basic change is that on Wednesdays the girls will only have math and language arts. We are squeezing a full unit of history (and science for Grace) into 3 days a week. This week went fine. We’ll see how this goes throughout the year. You may notice everyone wearing the same clothes in most of these pictures. Yup…one main day of pictures from this week! I’m glad I chose a good day with fun stuff going on.
Grace – Kindergarten: Little Hearts for His Glory Unit 22

So if you have noticed that Grace sometimes has more pictures than her sisters or why she is looking at the camera more I want to clear the air and let everyone know that no, she is not getting preferential treatment! Typically she is not merely willing for me to take pictures, but she is all about the pose! Not to mention that her personality is wide open. She always has a good week although as we are approaching 6, she tends to dissolve into tears more quickly than last year.
P1020625
We finished up with Fundanoodle this week. It was a bit sad to say goodbye to this series, but move on we must! We are continuing with Handwriting Without Tears. The reason I’m doing this is that a friend purchased the series and then decided she didn’t want it anymore and gave it to me. Anytime I’m given material for free I’m very grateful!
P1020635
Grace began using Math Rider this summer and loves being just like her big sisters practicing her math facts. I love that with Math Rider I can set the range to easier number sets for her and harder sets for her older sisters.
P1020647
All About Spelling is going great! Grace loves doing the tile portion of the lesson.
P1020691
This is one of my favorite pictures of the week! We are reading Owl at Home using the Emerging Readers questions in the Beyond guide. This is such a fun book. Grace loves finding humor in everyday life and she can’t get through a page in this book without giggling, and let me tell you, her giggle is simply adorable!
P1020695
We missed the science lesson last week about the earth being round (Not that uncommon around here) and so we went back and did the activity this week (Rather uncommon!). She loved spinning the globe round and round.
P1020701
Another science experiment we did had to do with absorption or repelling of water onto an object. She really enjoys this.
Beth – 3rd Grade: Preparing Hearts for His Glory Unit 2 (first half)

Beth had a good week although I’m really glad we are going at half speed. This is very good for her right now as she does need a work-load increase, but not so much as to burn her out.
P1020627
This week’s research was about Noah and the Flood. We spent quite a bit of time researching both in secular encyclopedias and biblical reference books. A wonderful discussion about discerning while we read.
P1020686
Math comes easily for Beth, so when she hits something that is harder she almost always gets upset. We had a few bumps this week because of that, but we made it through and will be pressing on next week!
P1020711
Beth excelled at her poetry writing this week! I really like the poetry pages from the files in the Heart of Dakota facebook group. Because she is on the young end of the guides ages this really helps her to not feel so overwhelmed.
P1020640
Beth probably doesn’t need Math Rider to retain math facts, but I still think it is good practice and she thinks its just plain fun! You can see here an example of the story-line and this is what captivates my sweet girl.
Rose – 5th grade: Creation to Christ Unit 16
Rose is always so serious about her studies. Although the pictures don’t always show it, she really loves what we do most of the time!
P1020632
We continued our geometry unit this week and Rose learned about measuring angles with a protractor. Her biggest challenge was making sure she lined everything up correctly.
P1020643
This week I purchased some thin colored Sharpie markers for her drawings in her notebook.
P1020678
I have a good husband!
P1020714
Rose loves reading her history in the living room. Mostly because she realized last year she can focus better and the couch is more comfortable!
P1020715
Both Beth and Rose are learning typing and Rose enjoys typing her writing assignments from Write With the Best. She is doing really well with this program and I have to say that I absolutely love the way Write With the Best teaches writing!
We had a great week! I’d love to hear about yours. If you are a Heart of Dakota Blogger you can join in the Weekly-Link Up by clicking below!
