I’ve raved over All About Spelling from All About Learning Press in many of my posts. I honestly can’t say enough good things about it!
I came into homeschooling being labeled as a “poor speller” and it caused me great concern. It didn’t matter that I graduated from high school 10th in my class of 405, or that I entered college with 18 course credits from my AP classes or that I excelled in college and graduated magna cum laude with my degree in middle grades education. None of that mattered. I had been told early on in my education that I was a poor speller and I just needed to study harder. I did study. I studied a lot. Spelling was still hit or miss with me. No matter how had I tried this was my main struggle in elementary school and I dreaded the yearly spelling bees since I rarely made it past the first round just within my classroom!
What a relief when middle school came and spelling was no longer required! It was also about that time that computers were becoming more main-stream and they included spell-checker, so I basically gave up trying. Why should I try when I had basically been told I wasn’t going to ever increase my spelling ability? The irony of it all was that my reading level was much higher than most of my peers. I was told high level readers usually translated into high level spellers. So what was wrong with me?
No one ever taught me the rules. Rules? There are rules for spelling? Except for “i before e except after c (and a bunch of exceptions we don’t have a rule for)” I don’t remember learning any rules. All About Spelling has changed my entire understanding of this subject. I searched it out when my oldest, an excellent reader, was clearly not transitioning to spelling easily. Rather than giving up, I started researching. I prayed for wisdom then scoured the internet, read numerous catalogs, and asked veteran homeschooling moms their recommendation. I settled on All About Spelling and haven’t looked back!
Beth finished up her Kindergarten year a little over half-way through All About Spelling Level 1. I could have pushed her a little faster because she loved it and it seemed easy, but I chose to do only 1 lesson about every 2 weeks, practicing just a little bit each day. This worked well for her and I plan to up the pace a bit in the fall. She’ll continue some through the summer to guarantee retention.

Is spelling easy for me to teach? Not at all! I learned to read using a whole language approach and didn't really become a good speller until I was in college. I wish for my kids to have an easier time of it! We are also LOVING AAS and AAR. We started in January and are cruising right along. I'm hoping to start my pre-k son on the pre-reading curriculum in the fall 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway!!

It's amazing how much easier it is to spell when you know the rules. I wish I had been taught more of the rules in school, too!

We just finished AAS level 1 with my 9 year old 3rd grader. I see some improvement but I'm very eager to try the next level. IT's easy for me to teach in that I understand it, but hard because she has such a hard time with spelling. Can't wait for it to get better. 🙂

My son is a FABULOUS reader, read early, reads voraciously. He seems to have NO natural spelling sense at all, despite all the reading he has done and the usual pre-reading diet of alphabet blocks, magnets, Sesame Street, Leap Frog, etc. etc. etc. He just turned 11 and we are slowly working our way through All About Spelling – he has made it partway through Level 3. Would love to win the chance to pick up the next level or two!

I haven't started teaching spelling yet, but spelling was always easy for me to learn… which probably means I will have a hard time teaching it since it came \”naturally\” to me!!

I haven't gotten to the point where I need to teach spelling but I have a feeling it will be difficult. None of the \”rules\” make sense and they seem to always contradict themselves. I only know how to spell because I memorize the spelling rather than remember some rule.

My daughter who will be going into the 6th grade has struggled with spelling…. so we started at level one with her ( the words are so simple for her) , but she is learning the rules to look for and follow, so for that we are happy. We just ordered level 2 but would love to win the gift card for all the other levels to come! 🙂 Thanks for the fun give away!! allgoodhood@gmail.com

We will be using AAS and AAR for the first time this year with my first grader and preschooler. I'm excited about it! I have very little knowledge of phonics rules myself. I'm sure I learned them at some point, as I am a strong speller, but for me, it has always been \”does it LOOK right,\” so I think I probably learned to read and spell more by sight than by phonics. I have ZERO confidence in my ability to teach phonics rules, and I know my son, who thrives on routine and rules, will likely need them in order to learn how to read and spell well.

We are still going through AAR level, so we haven't started spelling yet. I wasn't good at spelling when I was younger, so I am hoping that AAS will help my son be better at it than I was.

I was a poor speller in grade school and I still am. I am using All About Spelling with my boys and I truly believe, if I had been taught the spelling rules (who knew that there was a find gold rule or the \”floss\” rule?) I would be a better speller today! thanks for the giveaway!

This was our first year homeschooling and to be honest, spelling fell by the way side. My 10 year year old boy misspells just about everything but he is also not a strong reader. My 8 year old is still struggling to read, and we did some spelling. I have aas 1 and we will use soon and I plan to start the aar level 1 with my youngest. This would certainly be nice to win because I have not bought because I am trying to save for it.
