Heroes of History- Alan Shepherd from YWAM Publishing: A TOS Crew Review

YWAM Publishing Part of our daily learning is scheduled reading of biographies. We have a shelf full of these wonderful living history books and Heroes of History from YWAM Publishing  are som e of our favorites! We also greatly enjoy the Christian Heroes: Then & Now series. Grace was very excited to read Heroes of History- Alan Shepherd for her current study.  Heroes of History  Because the series are written as living history books (telling historical fact in a story-like way) they really feel more like novels than they do history books. Our mostly Charlotte Mason style of learning lends itself to these types of books and really makes learning more meaningful. If you don’t typically include living history books in your studies these are a great place to start!  We typically just read and discuss when studying biographies, but this series also includes a Study Guide to further enhance learning. With 108 to choose from you will certainly find someone interesting to read about!

I really like how these books delve into the individual’s childhood. This helps to see what brought them to the point in  history for which they are known. It is interesting to read about a famous person’s childhood because many times they are just like our own kids with diverse interests and unique skills, yet children just the same. This type of learning can greatly influence and impact our children as they dream of what they might do one day.

Grace said she really enjoyed this biography and it is one of the few more modern stories we have read. I liked learning about the technological advancements over the years and how they impacted Alan Shepherd.

Grace is 8 and sometimes had trouble finding the information to write down on her study guide. Some of the pages included vital statistics, a timeline, and mapping activities. It was a good way to talk about how to locate information in a book you are reading and how to read for answers. I think this struggle came mostly from not typically completing study guides while reading biographies. I personally prefer to opt out of additional writing activities because we have so many other writing based things going on, but I love that it is an option if we want to use is.
Another idea is to use these books as read a aloud and complete the study and a unit together. We rarely do “together” learning (as my girls call it!) so studying material in this manner is always a treat. This is one of the things I intend to do over the summer when we take a break from our traditional coursework.
Heroes of History by YWAMWe will always highly recommend these studies! If you aren’t sure where to start I would suggest Christian Heroes- Corrie ten Boom, Christian Heroes- C.S. Lewis, Heroes of History- Milton Hershey, or Heroes of History- Clara Barton. Grace had a particular interest in Milton Hershey and Clara Barton because she absolutely adores Hershey’s chocolates and dreams of being a nurse one day! She previously read these titles and enjoyed them so much she was very ready to dive into this book. As with our study, each of these comes with a companion study guide.
Which title would you choose first?

Week in Review: April 23-27 (Off Routine)

This week was a bit different. My husband’s cousin planned a surprise party for their grandpa’s 89th birthday. When I know of travel plans in advance I make sure I plan the week differently. Initially I was going to still have full school Monday-Wednesday, but with all that was going on to get ready to go we just did “light school” which was still quite a big of work. We basically just bypassed our history for the week.
We left early Thursday morning about 5:00 am and drove to Washington on the way to our part destination. We surprised our girls with a trip to the National Zoo, specifically to see a panda. Our sweet Beth has wanted to make this trip for a long time and it was something she talked quite a bit about during her hospital stay. We were so excited to have the opportunity to give her this experience!

Wow! These amazing animals were so playful and fun while we were there. Such a unique aspect of God’s creation!
Next, we stopped at the newly opened Museum of the Bible! It was AMAZING!
The girls loved the kids play area. They also loved the town of Nazareth! We enjoyed the encounters with characters from the town.
We also really enjoyed seeing the various artifacts and facsimiles of artifacts. The girls, especially Rose, were super excited to see an entire floor which featured on of our favorite resources, Drive Thru History!

One of the more profound moments for me was seeing the number of languages in which there is no translation of the Bible.
How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!’
 Romans 10:14-15
Then we traveled on to Maryland and waited until Friday evening to surprise Grandpa!
 Surprise!!!!
Kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids all celebrating this wonderful man! He was cherished and well loved this day.
We traveled home today and are enjoying some time with Grampy and Grammy before they travel on to Florida.
We’ve had a busy week and we are all tired! This is going to be another busy week with regular school, preparation for piano recital the next week, and our regular doctor’s physicals for the kids. I’m very excited for summer and a bit of a break from the busyness.

Adventures in Odyssey Club: Did You Know?

One of the features of the B-TV Episodes was called Did You Know? The girls always thought this was particularly interesting and fun parts of the episode so I thought I’d do my own Did You Know? feature about the Adventure Club!
Did You Know…

You will have access to over 800 episodes on demand?

In addition to all of the Adventures in Odyssey dramas there are also featured podcasts, episodes of The Last Chance Detectives, Radio Theater episodes, and loads of behind-the scenes content!

Did You Know…

You will receive a subscription to Clubhouse Magazine?

My girls have loved this magazine! It’s family-friendly content has been around a while, but stays relevant to today’s generation. There are also tons of Adventures in Odyssey features for the avid fan!
Did You Know…

You will have access to all of the Adventures in Odyssey Cartoons?

These were first released in the 90s by Focus on the Family. We have had a lot of fun watching them with the girls and access to these has been a great way to up our AIO knowledge, especially when we play Answer That!, a trivia board game we bought several years ago.
Did You Know…

You can read Devotions for you and your family to enjoy every day?
Each devotion pairs with one of the episodes which can be easily accessed right with there! Along with a Scripture to read and discussion questions you will really spice up your family devotion time.
Did You Know…

You will be the first to hear the newest episodes before they air on the radio?
Whether you are anxiously awaiting the newest monthly Adventure Club episode or can’t wait for the newest set in the series, Club members are the first to hear it all!

We are such big fans of this series. My girls listen to 1-3 episodes every night. We make sure to have plenty of episodes loaded onto our phones before we leave on a trip and my husband even rigged up a way to plug our phone into the speaker system of the car since it’s old school without bluetooth. We discuss our favorite episodes and use them as springboards for hard talks we sometimes need to have. AIO is such a big part of our lives and the Adventure Club is an amazing way to integrate it wherever we are!

Planet 316 Story Bible and the companion Planet 316 Story Bible App from Planet 316 and WorthyKids/Ideals: A TOS Crew Review

Planet 316 When I was a kid, children’s Bibles were fairly simple. Abridged versions of the story with a picture or two were plenty engaging. Our tech savvy kids can be engaged with the same types of Bibles, but when we have the opportunity to involve technology, their engagement rises to an entirely new level! The Planet 316 Story Bible and the companion Planet 316 Story Bible App from Planet 316 and WorthyKids/Ideals combines the truth of God’s Word with incredibl fun technology to create an completely different way for kids to engage with Scripture!  Planet 316 Story Bible and Bible App  We have a wide variety of children’s Bible in our home, but none like this! While it is geared towards early readers my 12-year-old and 10-year-old thought this was  one of the coolest Bibles for kids they have seen and quite often spent time reading it with Grace, who is 8 and much more the target audience.    The illustrations are sweet and fun, but tell the stories well. Each story is well-written and biblically accurate. This really is the most important thing to me when it comes to a children’s Bible. I am happy when they find it engaging and enjoyable, but if it isn’t doesn’t include sound doctrine and truth, I’m not thrilled. I was very happy to feel like the stories included were very true to Scripture.

The fun part is with the app! Our girls have larger tablets so the pictures were nice and big. She loved scanning each page and touching the pictures to see it come to life. I like that the app is simple to use and even though she sometimes didn’t get the page lined up perfectly it still worked beautifully. She did find there needed to be a quality light source as well as sometimes a little distance from the book in order for it to work perfectly.  We used this Bible at home for fun reading time. Some other ideas could be to use it as part of your family devotional. When our kids were little this is exactly the kind of Bible storybook we liked. If your little ones tend to have the wiggles, this will definitely help hold their attention! It could also be really fun in a Sunday School or Children’s Church type setting. Children will certainly remember the lesson well when having the change to engage with the app!

Tech loving families are going to really enjoy how interactive this is. Grace said she likes that the characters talk. Her favorite story was when Adam met Eve. I thought it was fun that Adam introduces himself to her and gave the impression that he was very happy to meet her.

If you are looking for a fun and interactive way for kids to engage with Scripture, give this a look. It incorporates the truth of God’s Word while using a technological medium to really draw kids into the Bible. Here is a look at how it works!   Planet 316 Story Bible and Bible App {Planet 316 Reviews}Crew Disclaimer

Adaptive Math Curriculum Online from A+ Interactive Math (by A+ TutorSoft Inc.): A TOS Crew Review

A+ Interactive Math Math is one of the more difficult areas to teach in homeschool if the conversations I have with my homeschool friends is any indication. It is usually not that we moms do not understand the concepts, but conveying them to our kids in a way that makes sense to them can be daunting. When difficulties arise it can be even more frustrating! Adaptive Math Curriculum Online from A+ Interactive Math (by A+ TutorSoft Inc.)  is an excellent alternative from traditional book lessons for mathematics. My daughters really enjoyed their time using this program.    Adaptive Math   The best part about this particular curriculum is that it is adaptive, meaning it adapts to your individual child’s needs, not requiring them to waste time reviewing material they have already mastered. This intuitive learning structure is excellent for homeschoolers. I can’t tell you how many times I have said, “It’s complicated,” when discussing grade levels. Homeschooling is so wonderful in that we have the opportunity to teach directly to our children’s level, but with math it gets complicated. It is harder to assess if a student knows something already or what exactly they are missing in a concept. This online program really takes our the guess-work entirely.

All three of the girls used this curriculum to try it out. One of the things they really liked about it was that neither my husband nor I had to be available to complete the work. They like the independence and since everything is tracked fully online they could complete this at any point during our school day.

Rose has used the grade-level programs from this company before, but she said she really liked the fact that she could take a pretest for a concept so it would place her exactly where she needed to be. She does prefer pencil-to-paper learning for math, but the printable worksheets are a great for kids like her.

Grace is fairly advanced in mathematics so I appreciated that while she is technically a 2nd grader, she could move forward to the 3rd grade level and still refine this even further to specific task skills she still needs to master. She especially liked having more computer learning time because being younger she is not on the computer as much as her older sisters. Overall I think this is the highest quality and most user friendly of the many online math courses we have tried. I asked the girls and they all said that while they liked it, they still preferred the pencil-to-paper method of our traditional learning. If I were looking for a program to take math learning off my plate, this would without a doubt be the one I would choose. The individualization and tracking makes it so very easy. I can see the answers my daughters gave and exactly how they are doing on any given concept. The teaching is clear and easy to follow. It also does not take extensive amounts of time. I’m all about quality over quantity! If you have never used an online math program or even if you have, but haven’t tried out this company, their free trial is definitely worth checking out for your family. If you don’t think the Adaptive Math Curriculum Online is the best fit, take a look at Family Math Package. While students are not tested for placement, all of their grade-level options are available so you are free to move grade levels at any time. Both of these math options are incredibly affordable no matter how many students you have in your family!

Week in Review: April 16-20

Sometimes we sit at desks…sort of! Homeschoolers, go figure, right?

This is the time of year I start to really get stressed. Things are wrapping up with my English class I teach and I am full speed ahead towards my piano recital. I have 27 students participating this year! We are keeping up with our schooling, but I’m also working in the background while the girls study. I haven’t been great at taking pictures this week, but I have a few!
Rose (7th Grade): Revival to Revolution Unit 14

Most of my photos with Rose these days are her working independently. Honestly, this is how homeschooling is working for us right now in middle school. She studies on her own and then we recap together. It’s beautiful really. She is excelling because Heart of Dakota helped me give her the tools she needed to know how to learn instead of merely stuffing facts into her head.
Grace (2nd Grade): Bigger Hearts for His Glory Unit 22
This girl is on the move constantly. The fact that she was studying her weekly memory verse from Proverbs sitting down was a miracle! She’s typically pacing around as she’s working. She’s still getting used to her glasses. They are definitely helping and she really loves them!

Beth (5th Grade): Creation to Christ Unit 29

Beth worked on an acrylic painting as a part of her history project this week. I just realized I think she forgot to finish it! I will have her finish it up tomorrow and post it on Instagram so you can see the finished work. Her water background was gorgeous.
Friday Science
This week Grace taught her sisters what she has been learning about cells in the human body. She loved this project and had a hard time waiting until Friday to make her edible cell!

They then had fun devouring it as soon as it was finished!

This was our week. How was yours?

Preserving Memories: April 15-20

This is my very busy time of year. I’m wrapping up the English class I teach including grading several projects and a major test, then calculating my student’s semester grades. I’m also preparing for my piano recital and I have 27 students participating this year! I also have several projects on my plate and don’t have as much free time for scrapbooking. Here are the few layouts had time to make. Expect lots of scrapping this summer while I’m on break from my jobs!

Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology from Apologia: A TOS Crew Review

Apologia  Grace is eight. She already has plans to attend a specific college to earn her nursing degree…as long as she can be assured a job where she doesn’t have to deal with blood! She thinks blood is gross, but learning about the human body is AWESOME! I asked her if she would like to study this as a regular part of her school day and she started jumping up and down with glee. When Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology from Apologia arrived on our doorstep she could not wait to dig into it.  Anatomy & Physiology   Our curriculum pack included the textbook, MP3 audio CD, and both the regular and junior versions of the Notebooking Journal. I loved having access to the entire course for Grace. She is in 2nd grade, but quite advanced for her age academically.I gave her the option of which Notebooking Journal to use and she chose the regular over the junior. I felt this was a good fit as well, but wanted her to make the choice. The older journal is best for students who are already comfortable with handwriting and especially able to write down their thoughts easily. The Junior version is perfect for younger learners who are still in the handwriting learning process but are ready to have focused science instruction.

I really like the option of the MP3 audio CD. This is great for kids who process better with auditory learning, are slower readers, have a reading struggle, or just as a n alternative to reading the book! I had Grace read the chapters, but I think this is especially helpful for younger kids who may be studying along with their older siblings. I know very few companies which offer this option with text books and am very impressed by the thoughtfulness of the company on this matter. It is important to note that this is not a direct, word-for-word reading of the text and may not always track exactly with the book. I actually really like this because I can have Grace read the chapter and then listen separately and she won’t feel like she is merely listening to what she read.  The content is Christ-centered, focusing on God as our Creator. This is very important to me as we keep this focus in our home on a continuous basis. Science is relevant to our every day lives and the way we understand the creation God has given us. The curriculum is filled with incredibly simple, yet satisfying experiments and projects to further her understanding.

The experiments which go hand-in-hand with the learning. I have found that all the supplies I need are usually already in my home, or quite easy to obtain locally at the grocery store.

Making a paper “Me” was one of her favorite activities! She was also very excited to go shopping to get the few things we needed to create her own cell model out of food. What an incredibly tangible way  to learn!

This is a kid who adores written workbooks! I know not every kid loves these, but seriously, this was a highlight of each chapter! She especially liked doing this particular crossword puzzle. We worked on it some together, but she did it mostly by herself. She will tell you that learning vocabulary and spelling words are her favorite school activity anyway, so anytime we incorporate this aspect into a new area she is completely on board. Knowing how much she loves words I can imagine her having the time of her life memorizing the various aspects of the human body she would need to in the medical field.

Grace’s desire to study medicine and help others is a reflection of her relationship with Him. While I know this may change, her wonder for how the body works and desire to help others will remain. She will now have a wonderful working knowledge of human anatomy and physiology even at a very young age. If you are looking for a new science course to study or have a budding medical degree in your home, this is a fantastic course for you to pick up!  Check out what my Crewmates have to say! Week in Review: April 9-13

(Pssst…read through this post to find a special offer just to my readers!)

This is what real-life homeschooling looks like! Sunglasses on her head inside, blankets all over from early morning snuggles, crayons from who knows what, doggy toys scattered around, and still learning happens. We have a schoolroom and the girls each have a desk, but honestly, most of their learning occurs elsewhere. One of my daughters likes order and chooses spots without chaos for her learning. This girl seems to thrive with a little clutter in her world. We have a group “clean up” time all around the downstairs after school is done and before I begin teaching piano lessons.

Here are some more aspects of our week…

Grace (2nd Grade): Bigger Hearts for His Glory Unit 21
When Grace wakes up in the morning she often comes downstairs and snuggles under a blanket. This week was still pretty chilly in North Carolina, so she kept her blanket handy all over the house. This is actually one of Beth’s blankets, but it is super warm and snuggly so we all take turns using it!

Grace enjoys grammar as much as her sisters with Rod and Staff. It usually only takes 10-15 minutes as we do the majority orally and I will often skip over some practice if I know it will be redundant. No matter what the current research says, I see great value in structured grammar lessons and diagramming. Understanding how the sentence parts work together does help in creating new sentences!

In history this week she read about Andrew Jackson. I skipped a lot of this reading. It was violent and dark in a way I didn’t want to delve. I remember skipping most of it with my other two as well. I also don’t particularly care for how positively he is portrayed. There are so many things about this man that does not make him a hero of history. While I am careful about how detailed I present some of the horrible events of our history, I also am honest with my daughters about these events.

Beth (5th Grade): Creation to Christ Unit 28

Here is a close-up of that same scene I have at the top. See what a little cropping can do? She’s working on giant numbers and learning how to use a calculator. Our tablets can do so many things!

We are closing in on the finish line of this guide. She has grown so much this year physically, academically, and spiritually. Ten has been a difficult year for her after her unexpected and unexplained hospital stay in the fall. She is incredibly healthy now and hasn’t had any repeat episodes. We are watchful, knowing there could be an underlying issue, but thankful that at the moment she is living completely normal without any lasting issues.

https://s6034.myubam.com/p/6163/complete-shakespeare-ir

I’m excited for her to get into the next guide which will focus heavily on the medieval period. I think she will really get into this! We will be reading abridged versions of Shakespeare’s plays over the summer all together which will correlate with her guide next year. I have to admit, I don’t really love Shakespeare, but I adore this title from Usborne! It’s beautiful and I’m enjoying reading it myself first!

My dear friend and book consultant, Julie Kent, is offering a 15% discount just to my readers for any orders placed through this link between now and June 1st. Simply place your order through this link (make sure it says consultant: Julie Kent and event: Grace-Filled Homeschooling) and after you place your order, Julie will be in touch with you to refund 15% of your book purchase price (excluding tax and shipping) either through PayPal or check in the mail. Rose (7th Grade): Revival to Revolution Unit 13

Penny is usually hanging around of of my gals during their studies. She loves to snuggle right with them! Rose uses her tablet more and more for school. Since it is larger it works like a mini computer. On this day she was continuing through her Spanish curriculum. She asked to take this foreign language this year because she feels God is calling her to the mission field one day.

She has decided to continue through her history over the summer. I am going to have her read the books and complete the notebooking pages although she may not finish the rest. This way she can be ready to start the next guide in the fall. We have also decided to go ahead and work through a high school English course next year. She’s quite advanced in reading and writing and she is quite excited about the prospect. I’ve been pleased with her diligence this year and she is often done with school early, leaving her time to pursue more interests.

One goal I have given her is to read through our collection of 30 or so abridged classics by the end of the summer. This will give her a working knowledge of quite a bit of literature without needing to delve into all of the books yet. I’ve always been an advocate of abridged classics and think they are excellent ways to introduce these works to kids. I’m also struck that there are many “classic” novels which I think are just awful. Sometimes understanding the story is enough and I don’t think it is necessary to actually read them. I’m also left wondering, who decides what makes a classic? Why are some absolutely horrible novels considered must-reads?

And I leave you to ponder those thoughts. I would love to hear what you think, so comment below!

Take a lot at what some other homeschoolers are doing this week!

Princess Cut from Watchman Pictures: A TOS Crew Review

Watchman Pictures

Family friendly films are sometimes hard to find. I’m excited to see a resurgence of this genre in theaters and on the small screen. We are extremely cautious about what our daughters watch. This is not only because of the language and violence, which is an extreme problem. We are also concerned about how women and love are portrayed in fictional stories. We watch very little live tv and when we do we often turn the tv off during commercials because even they objectify women and promote a value system completely opposite from our own.

I was interested in the opportunity we had to view Princess Cut from Watchman Pictures. The premise definitely intrigued me.

Princess Cut The Movie

The story opens with a young girl, Grace, looking for love in all the wrong places. While many well-known love stories start this way, this one goes a completely different route from most mainstream films. Grace begins a new relationship which concerns her parents. She is given advice from sources which are completely opposite from her parents who are striving to raise their children with a biblical worldview. After this advice goes badly, she finally talks to her parents who give some guidance about growing close to the Lord rather than just seeking someone to marry.

I thought her love interest would be someone completely different than it turned out to be. I actually kind of liked the guy she started to date at the beginning. He was not portrayed as creepy or weird until Grace turned down his physical advances. I’m glad the movie took this approach. Usually you don’t like the guy you aren’t supposed to from the start. This really shows that you must be discerning and listen to wise council. Just because a guy seems nice doesn’t mean he is! I want my girls to be discerning so they are not manipulated in their future relationships.

I like that the idea of faith plated a pivotal role. Still, this is not a preachy film. There were minimal references to Scripture, but biblical themes still ran throughout. I’m a Christian and very serious about my faith, but “preachy” films annoy me.

While I really did love the message and themes presented throughout this movie, the plot felt pretty slow. Some of the conversations and wording in extremely serious moments felt forced and unnatural. Grace’s character was very genuine and I liked her very much, as well as her youngest brother who provided some fun light comedic moments. One funny spot was when he places an ad in the newspaper to get his sister a guy and all sorts of weirdos show up!

It would be a great family movie night if your kids are a little older. If they are still in the cartoon phase most of the time they probably won’t really be into it though. I believe my 12 and 10-year-old would like this one, but probably not my youngest who is eight.
Check out the trailer!
My final assessment is it is definitely worth checking this out if you are a fan of faith-based films!
