Peek at Our Week: January 8-12

You will notice there aren’t many pictures of Grace this week! I teach an English class for middle school homeschoolers on Mondays and my husband teaches our girls. When I got home from my class poor little Grace (who was bouncy and lively when I left) was plopped on the couch and running a fever. She spent the rest of the week resting and is still getting over that. This is pretty much what her week consisted of…

Rose: Revival to Revolution Unit 5 (7th Grade)

Rose has really made strides in time management this year. She loves working ahead and actually finished almost the entire week’s worth of history assignments on Monday while I was working! She does not have less work than Beth, but finishes before her nearly every day.

We had an interesting thing happen that has dramatically improved our math time. My husband and I have always felt Rose’s so-called struggle in math was because it wasn’t something that came fast and easy. She understands the concepts and can work out the problems, but because it felt tedious to her, she thought she was not strong in this area. After testing with the Woodcock-Johnson test last week where she tested a full grade-level above her current work. This not only shocked her, it gave her a boost of confidence like I have never seen! Not only was math faster than ever before, she never once complained and even worked ahead!

And then on Wednesday, she came home from her science class and asked to go to bed. Yup, she came down with what Grace had!

Beth: Creation to Christ Unit 19 (5th Grade)

My dear Beth has not yet caught what her sisters have! This is a wonderful blessing because she battled a very serious illness in November. This sweet girl really loved the more individualized attention she was given on Thursday and Friday. I always work with her, but it was just her and I doing school the last two days and she loved it.

For her Bible study she enjoyed listening to a dramatized, word-for-word recording. She followed along in her Bible and it was a fun change. She did well in all her studies and I was blessed that she helped me out more than usual around the house on her own initiative since her sisters were sick.

Free Learning Friday

After reading what my blogging friend Misty from Joy in the Journey had to stay here on Instagram…

… I decided to give it a try. It went great! Well, 1/3 of my children enjoyed it. The other two spent the morning on the couch. I told them in advance they could decide what they wanted to learn about on Friday and I would do my best to comply.

Beth decided to study about Australia. I have a fabulous unit study from Amanda Bennett and was all set! Then the internet wouldn’t work. Then the printer wouldn’t work. Then both were fixed and the links wouldn’t work! No worries though, I pulled off several atlases and a couple of other resources and we dove right in. She loved it! Sometimes our plans don’t pan out, but we can still have fun learning. It was a great lesson for both of us in being flexible.

So that was our week! Honestly, plans were derailed and very little went as I had imagined between illness and internet woes and printer issues. I could have griped and grumbled and let the days be ruined. Instead, I chose to just go with it, and our week was lovely in an unplanned kind of way.

How was your week?

Restoration

One of our weeks of break was in Florida. We spent a day at the beach. I’m not usually a beach goer. I don’t particularly like the salt water and do not love the sand at all. But something about being at the ocean, listening to the waves, feeling the warmth…it was restoring. As we sat and watched the kids play, I couldn’t help but sing praises to the Lord for His care for my daughter. As I watched her play with her sisters and cousins, there was only pure delight and joy. You could not pick her out as having been so very sick just one month prior.

I love this man dearly. He enthusiastically indulges my crazy whim. He prays with me and over me. He accepts me as I am. I am a better me because of him. Stress can tear couples apart. The grace of God allowed us to grow closer. That is the beauty of a relationship centered on Christ rather than each other.
And so we returned to our home restored. We were greeted with below freezing temperatures, but it was good to be home!

Preserving Memories: Catching Up…

I’ve had a chance to scrapbook again over our break. I had a hard time getting back to it after my daughter’s hospital stay. It was partly time, but mostly motivation in all honesty. I was overwhelmed with trying to catch up and also just emotionally recuperating. Our trip South for the holidays was restorative with plenty of sun, warmth, and family. I also had fun scrapping!

Fabulous Last-Minute Stocking Stuffer Idea for the Little Artist in Your House!

Are you looking for last minute stocking ideas online? Look no further!

https://www.amazon.com/Magic-Stix-12pk-Washable-markers/dp/B076CYNCW3/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1514486632&sr=8-1&keywords=magic+stix

Magic Stix are some AMAZING markers! Their are incredibly bright and have a no-dry guarantee for 7 days!

The girls loved them. They always love art supplies, but these were particularly bold and colorful! They used some thicker paper for their artwork since they were using markers.

When you are off school for lots of days in a row sometimes you need a little help keeping the kids entertained. I only wish I had these years ago when we would constantly find dried out markers around the school-room because of forgetting the caps!

I LOVE their drawings! Rose and Grace chose a Christmas picture and Beth drew a cabin on a hill. So beautiful and see how bold these color are? This is on a slightly green tinted background paper and except for the areas not colored on you wouldn’t know it! Beth’s paper is the same as the other girls.

These markers are high quality, but affordably priced. Because of the won’t-dry-out guarantee it’s also an excellent investment!

Don’t miss your opportunity to get these fabulous markers!

Wonderful News!

There is nothing quite like getting good news for Christmas! It beats any store-bought present around, especially after our crazy November.
1. While the trigger for my daughter’s recent Macrophage Activation Syndrome is still unknown, her blood work from our Monday follow-up came back 100% normal! This is a first since early in November.
2. The CT scan showed that the lymph nodes which were significantly inflamed have now significantly reduced in size!
Both of these are huge praises and we are so thankful to the Lord for His healing!
Merry Christmas from our family to yours!

Christmas Traditions!

We have different Christmas traditions and we don’t always have the same ones every year. Here are a few from this year!
We decorated the tree! Not as many other decorations this year because of our crazy November. And yes, my girls are wearing t-shirts. That’s what happens in December in the South!
And then a few days later it snows…sort of. Just flakes in the air and a little sleet, but it was pretty! And this is a bit early for wintry weather in our neck of the woods.
My sweet girls surprised me with a Bonfire from Solostove! We love sitting around a campfire but the smoke really irritates my allergies.  This little beauty helps keep the smoke at a minimum. It radiates a wonderful amount of heat and allows us to safely and legally enjoy a fire within the city limits!
We visited the next town over to see a fun small-town Christmas parade! Our friends were on this float…but on the other side! It was so much fun!
Two of my piano students were in A Charlie Brown Christmas. One was Schroeder playing the piano on the bottom right in the purple and the other is in a plaid shirt just behind Snoopy’s doghouse. It was so much fun to see!
We read some Christmas stories. I have a collection of Christmas books I only get out in December. This is a new one I’ve never read to them! One of my favorite poems, In the Bleak Midwinter by Christina Rosetti was turned into a children’s picture book called, What Can I Give Him? , which is a line from the poem. I absolutely adored the illustrations by Debi Gliori. They told a dual story of a little girl in the country with her grandfather and a shepherd boy at the manger. It was a beautifully unique way to show two different stories with each page turn. If you are looking for a new book for Christmas I highly recommend this one!

How Adventures in Odyssey Helped us Survive a Week in the Hospital

So we had a really difficult time in November with one of my girls. We were in the hospital for seven days and some of the reason is still a mystery.
If you have ever spent time in the hospital you can agree that no matter how wonderful the care you receive, it’s not a place anyone would choose to be. That was definitely the case for us. We are beyond grateful to the Lord for His provision of incredible medical care, but surviving that week was not easy, especially for my sweet daughter. We had lots of visitors and wonderful friends who brought her coloring books, games, movies, and more. Although she appreciated all of these, there was one thing which helped bring her the distraction and comfort she needed more than anything:
Adventures in Odyssey
https://www.oaclub.org/

I grew up listening to Adventures in Odyssey and my girls have listened to this fabulous series since they were in the womb! Nearly every night they listen to at least one episode, sometimes more than one.

While we were in the hospital my girl would listen to these stories over and over again and they gave her comfort while she fell asleep, when she had her blood drawn multiple times a day, and when she needed to be distracted from all the poking and prodding.

They were my comfort as well. I can quote many episodes almost word for word now. Having these stories to distract my worried mind in the middle of the night was an incredible blessing.

Streaming access within the hospital made finding just the right episode fast and easy. If you know a child who is not feeling well this holiday, whether at home or in the hospital, consider a gift of the Adventures in Odyssey Club. I can tell you from experience it will bring healing of the soul for the family who listens.

Presperving Memories: November 27-December 2

These are a few random pages I’ve scrapped. The first is from 2009 in the spring picking berries with my oldest two girls, the next 2013 for Grace’s 4th birthday and the third 2009 from Grace’s first Christmas. I keep them organized by year so I can jump around! Sometimes I do that because I get a new kit I really want to use for something particular, or I have a specific subject for one of the gals I work for as a Creative Team member.

When Life Gets Crazy and We Want to Know the "Why"

The first of November my daughter came down with a fever. We had no idea on that evening this would be anything more than just a typical kid illness. After several trips to our amazing pediatrician over the next week we landed in the hospital for another week. At the end of it all we are left with very few answers, but very grateful hearts that she is steadily healing.

Time and time again the pediatric team and the numerous specialists we met with over the course of the week told us just how very sick she was, but how amazed they were she wasn’t worse, crediting our regular pediatrician for sending us to the hospital as well as the emergency room doctors for assessing the need for very specific tests which led to her early diagnosis. They began treatment with their working diagnosis before it was fully proven and within 12 hours we saw dramatic improvement. While we greatly value the wisdom and knowledge of every doctor we encountered, we credit Jesus our Healer for the speed with which she was diagnosed and treated.

Our human nature wants to know why things happen. Most of the time I come to the conclusion it is simply a result of a fallen world. While I rarely can see more behind the why of our trials, I know the Lord uses these things to deepen my faith. I have never physically felt the prayers of the saints in the way I did during our hospital stay. I felt emotionally calmed, physically strengthened, and a peace I cannot explain. We asked the doctors specifically what to ask people to pray for and they gladly told us. When we were given good reports we immediately gave praise to the Lord.

I learned so much about how to support and encourage those who are walking in difficulties physically. Bringing those who are supporting the one who is sick meals in the hospital is something I never considered. Specifically praying for certain aspects of hospital life is another one. I also was greatly encouraged by the many verses of Scripture sent to me via text. One of my dear friends who spent a lot of time with her son in the hospital sent me verses and told me she knew I may not be up to finding them on my own and she just wanted to encourage me. Wow! She was so right and every verse sent to me was exactly what I needed in the moment.

I also learned the need for rest and giving myself a space to cry. It was appropriate that I did not break down in front of my already frightened girl. We barely understood what we were being told and those big medical terms can be terrifying for children! The trauma of four IVs and 2-3 lab draws per day for testing left its mark, but I had to be calm and confident for her as we held her through all of that. When I needed to cry, I went to a place I could cry without interference. Getting that emotion out left me space to be what I needed to for her. I also took the advice of my husband and friend after the initial 24 hours of being awake and went home to sleep soundly. It was hard to go home, but it was what I needed to be sustained for the following days.

I have two very specific moments which I will forever remember. The first was when one of the doctors finished answering our questions after a very lengthy very medical explanation of some complicated and pretty scary things. After we said we didn’t have any more questions she looked at me and said, “You are taking this really well. Are you sure you are okay?” We smiled and told her we were trusting the Lord and while it was hard, yes, we were okay.

The second moment came just a few hours before we were sent home. One of the nursing assistants was chatting with me and asked what my husband did for a living. When I told her he was a pastor she broke into a huge smile and said, “I thought you were believers! I’m not aloud to ask, but I wanted to that first time I met you.” We had a wonderful chat at my daughter’s bedside and an opportunity to pray together before she left the room.

Those moments were very small in the scheme of my sweet girl and our search for answers as to what was attacking her little body, but they were moments of hope which gave me an assurance that when I am weak Christ is my strength.

Honestly, I think it may be the grace of God that we do not know Why? In my human nature there is no Why? which I feel should justify the suffering of my sweet daughter or makes it okay that she now begins to panic at the thought of a needle. So, I’m not asking. I don’t need to know. I just need to press on and trust.

We have been home a week. My girl may wear out a little faster than normal, but other than that she appears very healthy. She is eating well, running into leaf piles, and bickering with her sisters over trivial things. All of these are normal and I welcome them! We may never fully know what was behind all of this as we continue seeing specialists and receive test results. She may never be sick again, but we are also prepared this may be an onset of an autoimmune disorder. In the midst of all the uncertainty we see His hand and are choosing to say, “Blessed be the Name of the Lord!”

Preserving Memories: November 19-25

Life was turned upside down for the last several weeks around here. We are getting back to normal, and the Thanksgiving break has given me opportunity to do a little Scrapbooking! The first two are from our summer family camping trip. Everything else is working on my 2009 album.
