Week in Review: April 18-22

Another week gone by! We charged ahead with our work knowing that the weekend would bring fun with family. We took a short overnight trip to see my husband’s sister and watch their high school production of Mary Poppins which was excellent!
Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory
Unit 10
 P1060882
Grace is continuing to learn about the Pilgrims. in this unit and she is doing so happily. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about this part of the guide this 3rd time through. I have heard complaint that it is boring because so much time is spent on this part of history. I personally have loved it all three times. I think seeing my kids experience the meaningful activities and stories individually has made it unique each time. I also adore history and love seeing my kids come to appreciate it!
Grace finished up The Adventures of Laura and Jack, an early reader version of stories about Laura Ingalls Wilder.  She really liked this! It isn’t on the HOD emerging reader list, but I wasn’t able to get the next book from the library in time for this week. She’ll start Tornado next week!

This is my silly girl doing one of the history activities. One of the main themes for the week was waiting patiently for God. The Pilgrims waited patiently to find a good port and so we talked a bit about patience. In this activity she had to sit and wait until I told her to move forward. She giggled a lot but did a great job being patient!
Preparing Hearts for His Glory
Unit 18
 P1060880
This week Beth continued studying through Ancient History. I’m not in love with A Child’s History of the World. Being our second time through this guide I thought I might enjoy it more, but I just struggle to enjoy the way it is written. I like the older style but the perspective is hard for me to get through. I’ve kept an eye out for an alternative, but I haven’t found an age-appropriate one I am fond of yet. If anyone as a suggestion I’d be happy to hear it!
 P1060888
Studying the longer Bible passages has taken some getting used to. She memorizes well, but this is a jump from previous guides and she does not care for it…at all! It is going much better though. She still can complain about it, but it’s getting easier.
 P1060892
Getting through the poetry writing used to be a bit challenging, but over the last couple of weeks she has really gotten creative with this assignment! I’ve enjoyed her poems and paragraphs. She does seem to prefer paragraph writing to poetry and I allow her to write what she is most comfortable with each week.
Resurrection to Reformation
Unit 2
 P1060913
Rose  is very much enjoying her new guide. She loves the books for history and is really loving the Shakespeare and Art study. I have never really cared for studying either of these artistic areas, but I’m finding it to be fun as well!

Math is going along very well. We are easing through decimals. I’m so grateful I took extra time with Rose to redo the multiplication unit last year when she was struggling. This is the beauty of homeschooling. When we hit a rough patch I had the freedom to try again without having to push her into harder math concepts she wouldn’t be able to grasp. Now she is excelling and is enjoying working with numbers!
 P1060894
One of our favorite parts of this new guide is the Medieval writing assignments from IEW! I have used their Teaching the Classics material, but never their writing because I have been pleased with the HOD path. I really like how much growth I’ve seen already in Rose’s writing assignments. She is working hard to be creative and expound on just basic sentences. I also appreciate that she is becoming more comfortable with editing her own work.
There was our week! How was yours?

An Update

I’ve been a bit quiet here lately. To be honest I just haven’t felt like writing about much of anything. And so instead of giving into the blogging pressure of the need to post, I took an unannounced break. If you follow me on facebook you have seen sporadic peeks into our days, but even that has been pretty random.

The quiet started back in January when we said goodbye to my husband’s grandmother who is finally home with her Savior after a long battle with cancer. Her legacy of faith extends far beyond our family. She welcomed me as a granddaughter the first time we met even before I was engaged to my husband. She loved my girls well and they always looked forward to the cards she sent.

This was the first close family member my girls have said goodbye to. It was difficult in some ways and beautiful in others. My girls all have accepted Jesus as their Savior so they had a very good perspective filled with hope. As family gathered to celebrate her life my girls met some they never knew and heard over and over how their great-grandmother led many to know Christ. It was really a good experience overall.

Still…grief is hard.

I had many praying for us just before the funeral because I was concerned about how my girls would react to an open casket and just the funeral in general as they had never attended one before. I remember telling someone that part of my concern was that I didn’t feel like I handled my own pain very well in front of them. I don’t grieve well.

My friend’s response was, “Does anyone?”
Thinking on this and reflecting on our life as a family, I decided if I was going to grieve well I needed to take away any unnecessary pressures. So I took a break from publicly sharing our life. I’ve kept on reviewing for the many wonderful companies with whom I partner, but that has been about all you’ve seen for several weeks around here!
I’m ready to jump back in however! Here are some tidbits and highlights from the last 3 1/2 months…
The Girls
Narnia Room Transformation
Click the arrow on the right to see more of the room!

As a Christmas surprise the girls got a room redo! Their once purple/pink room with a few princess stickers on the wall has turned into a Narnia wonderland! The room is split between winter and spring. We used color pictures from the actual novels to decorate the walls and have various items around which are themed to the various stories. My favorite part is the tree which has a page from each book hanging from it. We spent 2 years gathering what we needed. Yeah, that is a long time! We just kept having trouble finding a time to work on it and get it done as a surprise. Our patience paid off and we were able to create the entire room decor for under $150. The quilts were a Christmas gift from my parents which completed the look.

P1050547
School has been wonderful since the Christmas break. We are still following a 6-week school model although as you can expect sometimes we get our break earlier than 6 weeks depending on our needs as a family.

P1060866
Rose has just finished up her first unit in Heart of Dakota’s Resurrection to Reformation and she loves loves loves it! When she started looking at all the books she would be using in this guide she said, “Mommy! I’ve hit the jackpot!” Such a sweet girl and so eager to learn.
P1050595

Beth has just past the half-way mark in Preparing Hearts for His Glory. This is sooner than I expected, but I’m finding in general each guide flows more smoothly for her. I have suspicion this is because she has heard most of it once before. Her favorite school-book is Grandpa’s Box and I don’t blame her! It is a favorite for all of us and one of those books that all three girls eagerly listen to during school time.
P1060867

Grace is motoring right along. While everything comes incredibly easy for her, she’d rather be playing than doing school so sometimes we do have a bit more complaining. I also know this can be an age factor because I remember the second half of 6 being a bit rougher for my other two than many other seasons. Still, she bounces everywhere and life is always full of new and exciting things to explore!
Me
12791004_10204124283467490_843464873926671707_n
I celebrated my 9th birthday! Crazy right? Well that’s what happens when you are born on Leap Year! This birthday was really fun because all of the girls understood what it meant to me.

I’ve been trying to get life in order. I have done some major, major purging around the house. It was one of those jobs I’ve been putting off due to the overwhelming enormity of it all. Between clothing, kitchen stuff, and household decorations I have gotten rid of hoards of stuff. I should have taken pictures to remind myself of how good it felt! Getting rid of all the “stuff” we don’t need has been so freeing. I paid for very little of it as we are blessed to have a lot of generous people in our lives, but as Cary Farrel, a good friend and professional organizer, says “When a blessing becomes a burden, it is time to get rid of it.” So I waved goodbye to things that were at one time a blessing and have felt so good in the process!
I’ve begun taking a nap every afternoon. About 3 years ago I discovered my iron levels had dropped to dangerously low levels. I could barely function. While I’ve been working hard to get them where they need to be, and they are improving, I still found myself completely exhausted by early afternoon. I work from home teaching piano every afternoon for about 3 hours so I needed to find a way to fix this. My afternoon nap is only 30-45 minutes long, but it has been life-changing!
I’m exercising more regularly. I actually started this back last year, but I’ve been walking about 2 miles through our neighborhood with my dear friend and neighbor. If you want to start being more active grab a friend! It’s great motivation, support, and accountability! This has been difficult previously because of the low iron issue.

Our Family
P1060184Our family has had some great opportunities to just spend time together having fun. We have just enjoyed playing games together, listening to Adventure in Odyssey, reading aloud more, playing the Wii, watching movies, and visiting fun places. My husband and I have always been intentional about our parenting, but we have been focusing on intentionally having fun.

P1050960
We have added two new family members! Penny, our puppy, joined us the day after Christmas on our way to FL to visit my husband’s parents. We stopped at the Humane Society and fell in love! She’s such a sweet little thing, a Rat Terrier/Chihuahua mix, which is funny because I thought she was a Jack Russel Terrier which I had my heart set on. In honesty if I’d know there was any Chihuahua in her she probably wouldn’t have come with us, but I’m so glad she is part of our family now. (This coming from a non-dog person too!)

P1050830
Lucy joined us in February. Again I had my heart set on a Balinese kitten because they are supposed to be better for allergies and have a sweet temperament. We came across her at our local shelter and she is just a wonderful part of our family!

P1050952
Lucy and Penny get along really well. They spend half their time wrestling and half their time cuddling!

P1060681P1060666

We recently took a really awesome trip over spring break with a high school friend of mine and her family. It was one of the most relaxing and restful vacations we’ve ever had!

And now as life is setting into routine once again I’m ready to start sharing our sometimes hectic, often imperfect, wouldn’t-change-it-for-anything life again.

Week in Review: November 30-December 4

P1040774

It’s been a few weeks since I have written about what’s been happening in our homeschool! We’ve been around, but we were off our typical schedule for a little bit. During that time we had the chance to visit Washington DC as well as some of our families! Visiting Mt. Vernon was a HUGE highlight, especially for Grace. She was so excited to see both where George Washing slept and where he ate his breakfast!
When we got home from this trip we were all a little ragged. A week of field trips will do that to you! So we took the week off from Heart of Dakota and just worked on some follow up activities from our DC trip as well as some math and language arts. The following week was Thanksgiving so we had school the first three days of the week, but kept it simple again and didn’t delve into our normal workload.
Finally we are back to normal! And believe it or not, this week was what I consider normal. We didn’t have any out of the ordinary circumstances (doctor visits, field trips, illness, etc.) and it flowed so very smoothly. No doubt three weeks away from our routine had something to do with that!
Grace: Little Hearts for His Glory Unit 33

One more unit! Only one more unit and Grace will be graduating on from Little Hearts. This guide has been so precious this third time around. I can appreciate it with her more for so many reasons. I know what to expect and having done the activities and projects twice already I’m very confident in knowing what to do (usually!). Her older sisters are able to work independently and I do not have any younger littles who need Mommy’s attention while I’m teaching her. Most of all, she has devoured the history. I have a feeling growing up hearing her sisters learn history has given her an edge in this regard even though both of my other girls also really love the subject.

P1050033
Handwriting is going beautifully and Grace is finally at the point where she is making her letters neater and can work on regular lined paper. We’re continuing on with Handwriting Without Tears (which was so generously given to us by a friend!) at the pace of 2 pages a day.
P1050055
Over the Moon! This is the best way to describe how Grace felt this week about learning to tell time on a “real clock” as she calls it! Just last week she told me she thought she would just stick to digital clocks. She said, “I don’t think I’ll learn about circle clocks, Mommy. Number clocks are easier!” She did enjoy our first few lessons about time though.
P1050043
If you are looking for a good way to review math facts, I highly recommend Math Rider. I reviewed this with the Old Schoolhouse Review Crew three years ago and our family purchased the game once the review period was over. It has been worth every penny as all three of my girls are solidly able to recall their math facts. They enjoy the story scenarios and I love how I can track their progress and see which specific facts are still an issue. All three use this several times a week and sometimes even play during their free screen time!
Beth: Preparing Hearts for His Glory Unit 7

FULL SPEED AHEAD! This was the week! I moved Beth into unit 7 at full pace and she did a fabulous job! I didn’t tell her I was doing so because I didn’t want her to worry about whether she could handle it or not. My husband teaches the older two girls while Grace and I attend/teach classes on Mondays. When I came home at lunch she said, “Mommy, it seemed like more work today, but I didn’t mind and I still finished early! And this was true for the rest of the week. I’m glad we were able to go ahead and begin full speed before Christmas because while we are all ready for routine after the break, getting back to steady work isn’t always the easiest.
P1050030
Math is very easy for Beth. In all honesty, everything is easy for Beth. I rarely see her struggle except in areas of neatness or following directions because she is in a hurry. So even though she doesn’t necessarily struggle with her math facts, I have her complete Math Rider exercises and it has only benefited her. I caught her working on division the other day even though we haven’t covered this concept even a little bit yet. She has a mind which grasps mathematical concepts quickly and just from hearing me teach Rose about division she has caught on and quickly moves on.
P1050071
One of the things I had held back on was the copywork in Preparing. This week I gave Beth her very own Common Place Book where she will write quotations, Scripture, and meaningful facts from what we are learning. Her’s is covered in panda’s on the cover because they are her favorite animal.
P1050038
We are continuing on with All About Spelling and Beth actually really loves this program. Again, spelling is very easy for her, but she loves using the tiles and enjoys learning all the rules.
P1050053
We also still work through the dictation as written in the Heart of Dakota guides and I’m very pleased with her progress. You can see her adorable panda journal in the bottom left corner!
Rose: Creation to Christ Unit 27

Rose continues to excel in this guide. She loves learning as much as her younger sisters and sets an excellent example of diligence. Because I create at weekly grid for them to check off their work for each day there are often times she gets up and begins schoolwork on her own without my prompting. She knows what she can manage independently and likes having this freedom. In fact this week she helped her younger sisters get started on work while I was still getting dressed for the day. They were so proud to be able to tell me the 2 or 3 things they had accomplished before our official start time of the day and I know Rose had a lot to do with prompting this.
P1050032

Until Math Mammoth came into our home I struggled to find a fit for my oldest. I have a feeling part of her struggle with math is due to my own inadequate feelings about teaching it. However, she now smoothly flows through the lessons each day and when we hit bumps there are fewer tears, more patience, and lots of smiles once it is conquered!

P1050048

My girls can be found reading in any number of rooms around the house or even outside when the weather is nice! One of Rose’s favorite places for reading history and literature now is on the couch snuggled up near the Christmas tree. Can you blame her?

P1050051
We do not us the recommended Bible along with Creation to Christ because we own so many Bibles already! Instead we use Illustrated Bible Stories from Masterbooks. While it doesn’t match up absolutely perfectly we use it when it does and just read the passage directly from Scripture when it doesn’t. This is the main reason I love Heart of Dakota. My girls are learning to study God’s Word on their own, consistently, faithfully, and deeply all the while on their level.
P1050064

Just this morning as we were working on finishing up the work for the week we had something new occur. I was listening to Grace read her literature for the day and Beth asked if Rose could teach her grammar lesson instead of waiting for me. I knew the topic was something Rose had already mastered and was also actually review for Beth so I thought it was worth a shot. Wow! It was so beautiful to hear the girls interact in this way. I’m not planning on giving over teaching responsibilities to them or anything, but I think it was a very neat thing for Rose to take on the role as teacher. She corrected gently and Beth patiently listened. It made my heart smile to see them working together and I know it benefited them both.

P1050049

We had a fabulous week. Not all of our weeks are this lovely, but this one was. I’ll need to tuck it away in my mind to pull out and remember on those days when my plans fall apart!

Week in Review: October 26-30

After being sick most of last week with a horrible upper respiratory thing going around I was so grateful to feel well this week. There is nothing like bad health to remind you to be grateful for the good health we often take for granted. Thankfully this just hit my husband and I. Our girls mostly missed it with only a few sniffles.
This week went really well for the most part except for a few moments of meltdowns with my youngest. She is in one of those phases right now that everything contrary to her immediate desires requires an overly dramatic response. I remember this being pretty common for this age. I also remember that this phase passes as they all do…thankfully!
Grace – Kindergarten: Little Hearts for His Glory Unit 30

We studied about Abraham Lincoln, General Lee, and D. L. Moody this week. Grace loved the poem this week about these three men who lived during the same time period of the Civil War. This was especially meaningful because all of the students at our learning center had the opportunity to hear from a couple of Civil War reenactors the previous week. Grace is the little blond head with the pony tail!
P1030895
She started reading about Buffalo Bill this week. All of my girls are excellent and eager readers, but of the three Grace is the most curious. She always wants to learn more and more and more…
P1030958
We struggled with handwriting this week. She no longer wants to practice and just rushes through her work. More than a few of our meltdowns occurred when I erased the ones she had not tried her best with and asked her to redo them. This did not please her at all, but by the end of the week she figured out this would keep happening and I noticed a marked improvement in her effort.
P1030962
While I read history this week I gave Grace some different activities to do with her hands. She loved this and my goal is to help her grow in the area of finger manipulation activities.
P1030968
I love how she props her little foot up. Do you notice her sweater and bare feet? She takes after me in that way. Even though I’m quite cold natured I really don’t like wearing socks. I do once the cold weather hits, but all three of my girls prefer their bare feet like their mama!
Beth – 3rd Grade: Preparing Hearts for His Glory Unit 6 (1st half)
P1030929
Beth continued studying about ancient Egypt this week. She loves the history projects. I really like that there is purpose in the art and creations she is making. Not only is she learning a variety of artistic mediums, but she is furthering her understanding of history.
P1030921
In preparation for creating her Crook she researched using our Bible dictionary. This has been one of the best resources for us for both Preparing and Creation. If you are able to invest in a really good in depth Bible dictionary, do it!
P1030960
We use the Rod and Staff worksheets and tests. I really do like testing my girls and they are not stressed at all. It is a helpful gauge for both me and them to see what we need to make sure we review again. I use the worksheets at the end of a chapter as review. Both of the girls likes these and really prefer them to the regular book-work!
P1030956
My sweet Beth can be found in any number of areas when she reads! This week she was reading Sarah Plain and Tall. She wanted to know why it was titled this and I told her to read a bit and see what she found out. She came to me so excited when she figured out to whom the title referred!
Rose – 5th Grade: Creation to Christ Unit 24
P1030901
Math is going very well and this week we moved into working with decimals. That little grin on her face has nothing to do with math and everything to do with my teasing her for looking so serious while she was working!
P1030939
As I was trying to get over my cold completely I wasn’t able to read aloud quite as much today. Rose is such a good sport and happily read a lot of her geography on her own this week. I did read some with her, but she understood my need to read more to her youngest sister and helped me out a lot this way!
P1030961
We really struggled with spelling when we first started out with HOD. We ended up following both the HOD spelling recommendation and All About Spelling. I’m grateful to both methods and where spelling was once one of the longest parts of the day, we now move through it quite quickly.
P1030951
It’s a bit hard to see as I was struggling to get the lighting adjusted correctly this week for my pictures! Rose is working on her notebooking pages for history, which she loves. I really like how timelines are presented in Heart of Dakota. She draws beautifully and the timeline entries are more meaningful to her because of this.
How was your week? If you use Heart of Dakota curriculum please link-up your week in review below!

Week in Review: October 12-16

The beginning of this week was a little harder than usual. My husband was away at his annual District Conference for all the pastors in our district of the Christian and Missionary Alliance. We did just fine on our own (It was only one night after all!) but my husband is a very hands on dad, so even just a night away left my girls missing him a lot!

We kept our routine as usual for the most part. Daddy did come home with a cold that is now making its round among the rest of us. Thankfully it doesn’t seem all that serious so we’re hoping to bounce back soon.

Here is a peek at what school looked like this week…

Rose – 5th Grade: Creation to Christ Unit 22
P1030525
Rose has really enjoyed the notebooking pages in Creation to Christ. We really like the erasable gel pens from Frixion and there are often coupons for these in the Sunday paper. For coloring pictures and the timeline portion we use sharpie markers. We have worked towards neater handwriting without lines as well as proof reading. One of the best ways we work on that is for me to read her work out loud phonetically. This helps her hear both her grammar and spelling mistakes…and sometimes it gives us quite a giggle! This is also a little secret way I’m helping my perfectionist daughter treat her mistakes a little lighter. When we can laugh about it together she doesn’t take it so seriously.
P1030495
We started reading about Cleopatra this week. Rose reads her story time assignments to herself. Running three guides and a part-time business from my home teaching piano every afternoon means we have made a few changes to how the Heart of Dakota guides are done. I don’t mind because we still discuss the reading selections. I like how much my girls are learning independently.
P1030507
Here are my girls working on their weekly history projects. They were so sweet chatting away as they worked. Rose kept telling Beth how much fun her project was going to be. My girls get really excited about seeing one another do things. I used to wonder what it would be like when the were all doing projects and if they would wish they were doing each other’s. I certainly would understand that, but they seem to just take it as a matter of “this is how we do things around here”. They also are really great about complimenting each other’s efforts which is sweet to observe.
Beth – 3rd Grade: Preparing Hearts for His Glory Unit 5 (1st half)

P1030494

Beth never really seemed interested in art until this year. She was not at all excited when we first began Draw and Write Through History, but now she really seems to like it. She takes more time with her drawings and I even catch her drawing the same thing later on just for fun sometimes.
P1030524
Cursive is getting much, much easier. It’s just a matter of time. Her letters still seem a bit awkward, but I know it will come. Her printing seemed to improve overnight this summer and we will keep plugging away at cursive!
P1030515
Here she is working hard at her Egyptian hieroglyphics project. She was frustrated at first because it wasn’t turning out like she expected. So I helped her see how best to etch in the hieroglyphics, she smoothed out my work and did her own pretty quickly. And yes, her body position is just about as awkward as it appears in this picture! The way my kids contort themselves while they study amazes me, but I’m glad we have the freedom for this. Beth is typically the one wanting to work on the floor. Rose likes to sit at a table Grace would rather dance her way through her work!
Grace – Kindergarten: Little Hearts for His Glory Unit 28
P1030509
I love this picture! While Grace and I were working on Spelling Beth couldn’t help but listen in. She was supposed to be doing her copywork I think, but I didn’t really mind. Every time Grace spelled something correctly she would say, “That was good!”
P1030519
I have a favorite handwriting program (Fundanoodle!) but, when you are gifted a handwriting series for free, you say, “Great!” and fly with it! My girls have honestly all used something different and they’ve all done fine. Grace is now in the second handwriting book for Handwriting Without Tears. I was having her do 1 page a day, but she has been asking to do more, so I think I may plan more for this coming week.
P1030497
Grace is so excited about her history now and sometimes enjoys reading it on her own. I have a feeling watching her big sisters do this is part of the reason, but I’m grateful she finds so much joy out of learning on her own. We actually call her our little dictionary because she loves to define words and if she doesn’t know what something means she’s quick to ask. She is always thinking and driven by curiosity. Her eagerness to know more is contagious!
Did you have a good week on your own journey through Heart of Dakota? We’d love to hear about it! Don’t forget to link-up below!

Week in Review: Ocober 5-9

Our weeks are in a nice routine now so that when we do deviate from the “normal” like last week it really isn’t a big deal and feels more like a break. The only frustrating thing for the girls this week was that their year-round school friends from across the street were on break and we kept plugging away. It was nice that their friends didn’t have homework in the afternoon and could play longer! Especially once the rain subsided. We certainly got a “wetting” as Winnie the Pooh would put it!
Beth – 3rd Grade: Preparing Hearts for His Glory: Unit 4, 2nd half
P1030481
Beth has settled into our routine with Preparing much quicker than I anticipated. She seems to take added workload a little more in stride than her older sisters. Perhaps knowing what is coming helps her in that way. The only thing she does not love doing right now is the cursive copy work. We did however manage to get through it this week with minimal sighs and no complaints. This may have been due to the fact that she lost certain screen-time privileges for pulling out her complaints the week prior.
When it comes to whining and complaining I take the timeless advice of Barney Fife…
P1030473
Beth really loves her history projects. I’m doing much, much better this year about making sure they happen but it is easier that she is taking two weeks for each unit. We’ll see if I continue to do this well once we move to full-speed!
Grace – Kindergarten: Little Hearts for His Glory: Unit 27
P1030474
Grace loves studying her Bible verses out of her “real” Bible as she loves to call it. She can read them on her own and seems to feel very grown up as she studies in another room and comes back to recite to me. We talk about what the verses mean, but she needs much less help from me. While it is a little bitter sweet sometimes I love that she, and her sisters, are becoming independent learners. I’m facilitating the process, but they are understanding how to discover and discern for themselves which is really what my purpose is.
History is so much fun with this little sweetheart. She has such a passion and excitement for life! We spent some time learning about George Washington these last couple of weeks and she is very much anticipating our visit to Washington DC very soon which will include a visit to Mt. Vernon.
P1030479
A couple of years ago we were gifted a set of Handwriting Without Tears. While it isn’t the program I recommend most often (I really like Fundanoodle handwriting!) I can’t complain about free! She does tend to rush a lot when she writes and we are working mostly on taking time to do the best she can. I tell her, and her sisters, quite often that I do not expect perfection, but I do expect their best effort.
Rose – 5th grade: Creation to Christ: Unit 21
P1030483
When we started Write With the Best I was a bit nervous. I kept seeing comments that people did not like it so I was a little nervous. My background as an English teacher tends to make me very, very picky about what kind of Language Arts materials we use. I can say now we absolutely love this program! Here are some of my reasons…
1. Using the model of classic literature
2. Editing practice
3. Focusing on one concept in each lesson
4. Small steps for longer lasting projects
P1030485
Rose has also been excited to get back into the Draw and Write Through History books now. She loves these and her art is improving all the time. She usually uses a pencil to draw, then outlines with an erasable pen and colors with sharpie markers. The results have been really beautiful.
P1030487
The girls finish up math and language arts after their science class on Wednesdays. This was one of the first days of sunshine in the south after all that rain! They enjoyed a honey lollipop on the back porch while doing their reading. All three girls are here, but Grace is sitting on a little stool in between the older two lower on the ground.
Great week for us! How about you!

Week-in-Review: September 28 – October 2

This week was a little different from our normal…I feel like I’m writing that all the time! Perhaps I need to realize there really isn’t a “normal” when it comes to homeschooling, or life in general really. The beauty of homeschooling is that when regular life throws us some abnormal along the way we can bend and flex to accommodate with ease.

So what threw us off our normal this week?
Just a little something we like to call Global Focus Week!
International workers Raymond and Mary Ebbett joined us for 4 days, sharing about what God is doing in Spain. Twice a year we are blessed to hear about what is happening around the world within our denomination as well as in cooperation with other organizations on behalf of the gospel all around the world. Talk about a wonderful learning opportunity! In addition to hearing all about God’s work, they also brushed up on their geography, a bit of European history, and a few words of Spanish!
Since we were out late every evening and I know from previous experience that my girls will be super tired and have a harder time focusing. So we kept school focused on Bible and history knowing these are the most fun for them to do. They also completed several chapters in Life of Fred and continued in their books assigned for literature.
Heart of Dakota is so rich that even only using the history and Bible for the week we still had a full school week. Here are a few highlights…
Grace: Little Hearts for His Glory Unit 26
Grace has started reading some of her history on her own and her sisters also love reading with her. I’m sure this is part of being the littlest learner in the house and her observations of all that has gone on around her for as long as she can remember. She enjoyed learning about George Washington in her readings.

This week she also enjoyed using a manipulative called a 100s board with tiles. We have a couple of very good friends who happen to be retired teachers and bless us with some wonderful treasures every now and then. This wonderful gem came with a great book with all sorts of activities for all elementary ages. And it came to us just as Grace began studying the patterns found in the 100s board.
Beth: Preparing Hearts for His Glory Unit 4 (1st half)
Rose is really enjoying this guide. She especially liked the book Life in the Great Ice Age. Half-pace has been perfect for her just as it was for her older sister. She has really gotten into drawing with Draw and Write Through History. I’ve also been excited that see almost overnight her print has become amazingly neater. She does not prefer cursive, but we are persevering and I hope to see this improving soon as well.

Right now Beth is reading Diary of a Real Payne. This Christian fiction enthralled Rose when she read it a couple of years ago and Beth has been giggling her way through as well! I love when my girls recommend books to each other. It’s so fun to see them sharing their joy of reading together.
Rose: Creation to Christ Unit 21

Rose really loves her studies. Quite often she will work ahead without telling me because she loves what she is learning. We moved this week into the life of Christ. We use a different Bible from Master Books and I really like it even though some of the chapters are missing. When that happens she just reads from the actual text in Scripture.

She really enjoyed getting back into Life of Fred this week. We used it consistently last year but had not added it back in since we started back full-schedule yet. I’m so grateful for that series as it helped her love math again!
Don’t forget to check out what else was happening in the Heart of Dakota world in other homes this past week!

Week in Review: September 14-18

Last week was a week off for us as I prepared for the start of my literature and writing class. We also spent a few days with my sister-in-law and enjoyed seeing them over the Labor Day weekend. The rest of my week was filled with faculty meetings, introductory activities, and prep for my class. It was a good and busy week, but I’m really glad we took off from school!

This week was also a little different. We deviated a bit from Heart of Dakota, but still completed school this week. Monday was busy, busy busy! This year I’m teaching 10 really awesome 12-14 year-olds who are homeschooled. This is also where my girls take classes. Grace’s class meets two days a week so she goes with me on Mondays. This year I’m teaching 10 really awesome 12-14 year-olds who are homeschooled.
We began our regular school year back in August, but our tradition is to have our first-day-pictures at the start of our homeschool classes. Rather than a co-op type setting, our learning center is set up more like a private school. We have an administrator and the teachers are hired, not volunteers. We really like the structure and the girls even enjoy wearing uniforms!

My funny girls do a great job at pictures for me and I happily acquiesce when they request a silly one!

So in addition to beginning their science classes we also completed quite a few chapters in Life of Fred, read may chapters in a variety of books, completed a health lesson, and took a field trip!

Week in Review: August 1 – September 4

Next week I’ll be prepping for the class junior high English class I teach to junior high homeschoolers. This year I’m working really hard to be ahead on the many responsibilities I have.

I’ve been doing much better with our homeschool lesson plans. Everything is laid out and easy to follow in Heart of Dakota, but in order to track it all I need to have it laid out on a grid. I also have been much more consistent about inputting the girls assignments each morning into their homework app. This has been a huge help in the smooth start to our year. I’m planned ahead for both my English class and the moms ministry I lead at our church. I also have plans for my Christmas piano recital in the works. I still feel pressure as the year is under getting under way, but the stress is significantly less.

On to the girls’ week!
Rose: 5th Grade – Creation to Christ Unit 18

We are starting the second half of the guide! Rose has grown so much from last year and I see how much she is continuing to enjoy school through Heart of Dakota. Now is the time of year I begin to look ahead to what is coming next. We’ll move on to Resurrection to Reformation sometime after Christmas. Right now I’m in the process of making a spreadsheet of all the books I will need and how much they would cost new. I’ll buy them up slowly over the next several months. This helps us keep from dishing out a large sum all at once as well as gives me the opportunity to shop around for bargain used books. I typically save about 50% off the total.

Rose loves the notebooking pages. I really like the timeline in particular. I think it is highly meaningful for my kids to create their own timeline pictures. This method begins with Beyond so by the time we reach this guide it is just part of the week.

Bible study with Heart of Dakota is genuinely meaningful. Yes, it is part of school, but it is meant to penetrate their hearts. God’s Word never goes forth without return. The long passages for Scripture memory are incredibly rewarding and beneficial. I am so happy with how Heart of Dakota lays out the Word of God.

We finished up the History of the Ancient World this week and while Rose said she enjoyed it, she is very much looking forward to new books. She is very excited that we are beginning the life of Christ next!
Beth: 3rd Grade – Preparing Hearts Unit 3 (1st half)

So this is actually the painting project from the previous week which we didn’t get to. Our TV trays have provided an excellent way to paint and allow it to dry off to the side!
P1030052
This week’s research was about cave paintings. I have some wonderful resources from Master Books about our ancient ancestors. One of my favorites is The Genius of Ancient Man. It is such an interesting read! It is a big above Beth’s level, but provided some excellent examples of cave art in addition to what was shown in Life in the Great Ice Age. We avoid Wikipedia because of its unfortunate inaccuracies at times.

After studying about cave paintings Beth began creating her own. She’ll finish this project when we finish the unit.

Rose took this sweet picture of us reading history together!
Grace: Kindergarten – Little Hearts for His Glory Unit 24
P1030219
This sweet girl is full of giggles during our reading time with Frog and Toad. She loves good humor and it’s fun to see her catch the witty narrative in these books. I remember reading and loving these books as a child as well. It’s so fun to share them with her!
P1030044
One of the weeks assignments was to create an island like New Amsterdam. She really likes these projects and I love giving her the freedom to create. I’m sad to say when we first started out homeschooling I didn’t do as good of a job at just letting my kids do what they do best: Create! I tended to micro manage and prefer to just skip some activities because of what I perceived as unnecessary. I’ve learned to be much less rigid in this way and it is for the better. Sometimes projects fail, but my girls never seem to mind. They enjoy the process of creation and do well to learn on their own without my interference!
P1030049
One of Grace’s jobs is to update the calendar each day. She takes this very seriously and does a great job at it!
P1030054
This week we learned about place value with tens and ones. I love this abacus I snagged at a yard sale for $1. I’m always on the lookout for things I can use and you never know what you might come across. This one came from Florida while we were visiting my husband’s parents. They have the best yard sales in South Florida!
Our week was really good and I did a much better job of snapping pictures of everyone! I’d love to hear how your week of homeschooling went!
