Week in Review: August 27-31

Second week of school…and we have our new printer! Yay! We were quite impressed with Epson’s customer service and intend to stick with this brand in the future because of it.
We are still trying to get our routine in place. It is a little hard because so many other things are gearing up, like the English class I teach, AWANA at church, piano lessons…school is happening, but pictures are not! Here is a little of what the girls did this week…

Beth is very interested in zoology and is working through an activity book about ocean animals!

We’re back to school…mostly!

My girls were totally ready to get back to work, but I wasn’t quite there yet. We started school, but I didn’t have all of my ducks in a row. They did a lot of work. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why my printer wasn’t working right! I have to say, I’m hugely impressed with Epson customer service. The error indicated a hardware issue which I found out after an hour of unplugging, re-plugging, holding down buttons for specified times, doing a little dance, holding my breath while I stood on one foot…etc. It took a simple phone call with a really nice gal to get a new printer sent! It definitely put a kink in our week since I wasn’t fully all set to go. Anyway, here are a few pics…

God Schooling: How God Intended Children to Learn from Julie Polanco: A TOS Crew Review

Julie Polanco Books

I like to tell people I’m an accidental homeschooler. It was never in our game plans. Yet, when we started homeschooling I jumped in with both feet into deep, deep waters! We chose this path about 2 months into Rose’s 1st grade year. She was attending a Christian school which we loved and had a teacher who she adored. Our decision to make this change came after a lot of prayer over how to handle some bumps Rose was facing in school which presented themselves in very emotional ways. While we hated to leave this school we felt I could address some of the challenges she faced better one-on-one at home. While there were numerous resources available, I didn’t really research online or read any books because it happened rather fast. I look back and wonder how I may have done things differently early on if I had read books from experienced homeschool families like God Schooling: How God Intended Children to Learn from Julie Polanco

Julie Polanco BooksJulie Polanco is a veteran homeschool mom who is seeking the Lord as she goes along. It is important to me to know the sources of my information use the Bible as a starting point. While there can be some good information gleaned from sources not grounded in Scripture, I feel more at ease diving into a book I know is. I encourage you to read her testimony found here. I think you will find it to be both interesting and encouraging!
God Schooling book
In her newest book the author seeks to help parents navigate the twists and turns which come while homeschooling from a biblical perspective. I truly appreciate the author’s desire to put the Lord first in every chapter. It is a wonderful reminder to keep Him in the forefront of our schooling when it is very easy to put ourselves or our children in that place. The author’s personal stories and experiences provide an excellent first-hand account from someone who has really been there in the trenches. There will be many voices in your life as you homeschool your young children who will offer advice on everything from scheduling to curriculum choice. While well-meaning and supportive, it is harder to accept this advice unless they are personally experienced homeschooling.
My favorite aspect were the thoughtful questions provided at the end of each chapter. This would make a great group read for homeschooling moms! I also liked the opportunity to really think through my own philosophy as a part of reading this book.
My favorite chapter in the book was Giving Teens the Wings to Fly. This is probably because my oldest is now 13 and my younger two are fast approaching! I truly appreciated the insights offered here on expectations and responsibility (both at home and work), looking ahead to post-graduation (college or no college?), and allowing teens to find their identity. The only issue I did not fully agree with was to what extent to allow them to find their identity through style. I felt the author recommended giving too much choice and freedom to do whatever the child wanted as soon as they turned 13. While I do feel it is important to allow more choices to be made, in our home there will still be guidelines and permissions given when it comes to dress and style.

Much of the author’s advice is from personal experience with her own children. Some have learning challenges and others do not. I appreciate her insights into natural learning methods, but I am cautious anytime someone declares a particular style of learning God’s way of learning. My personal opinion is that the Lord can use a variety of styles and approaches to learning as we are all uniquely created. Where some students need more freedom to explore, others thrive with a more structured style. I do think it is important to consider a variety of learning styles and structures for homeschooling one must consider their children’s temperament as well as their own teaching style when choosing how to guide their children through homeschooling.

Overall I think this would be a helpful book to read when first starting out on your homeschooling journey, but as with all homeschool books the best way to approach it is to glean what works for your family for implementation without feeling obligated to implement the rest.

Week in Review: August 6-10

Our learning this summer hasn’t been as focused as usual because of our many trips away. I didn’t assign the girls anything to do, but all three had fun with learning games and being creative.

We have enjoyed a rather mild summer in my opinion here in the South. Not everyone would agree with me and we have had a few hotter days, but generally we have all enjoyed more time outdoors than we typically do!

As for me, I’m determining to study and feel more comfortable with mathematics. My plan is 3-fold. You can read about it here!

We also celebrated this little sweetheart…

…turning 13! She asked for lemon bars instead of cake so we made a delicious gluten free version!

Building my Confidence: My Year-Long Journey to Understanding and Appreciating Mathematics!

I’m starting here with Exploring The World of Mathematics from Master Books. As I read a chapter I’m then reading through the corresponding mathematical concepts in this book:

Next I’m reviewing concepts through practice using the Green & Gold series from Math Mammoth and some concepts from the Real-Life Math series.

The final aspect of my plan is to read through a series of books by Dankia McKellar. They were written for middle schoolers and I’ll be honest I’m not a fan of all the titles or the constant references to boys, dating, being “sexy” and pop culture. STILL, her writing style is easy for me to follow and they have been very helpful for review! I’m not intending to have my daughters read them simply because they present a worldview contrary to what we want for them. I wish there was something like this that didn’t include the need to do this. So I am NOT recommending them for your daughters, but I AM recommending them for YOU if you need a more down-to-earth way to review mathematical concepts. Our local library had all 4 available.
Do you have any resources you want to recommend to me? I’d love to hear about them!

Week in Review: July 30 – August 3

My husband and I spent this last week in Clarkston, GA serving alongside Envision, a ministry of the Christian and Missionary Alliance. It was a wonderful to work alongside them as they seek to minister to refugees. The Lord spoke to us both and we are looking forward to the next opportunity we have there. I’m not posting many pictures for privacy reasons, but here are a few just for fun!

Even though we are used to serving together in ministry, this was different. We served in different ways and with different roles than our “usual” which was incredibly refreshing. We laughed a lot, along with our other team members, and really just enjoyed one another’s company.

This is me. I’m the one in pink. I’m whacking at weeds…
This was not my favorite moment of the week. I had no idea what I was doing with the tool I was given. It was a beautiful reminder that we need to be willing to serve where it is needed, not always where it is the most comfortable.

The girls spent the week with my parents and while I know they had a great time, we were all very excited to see each other again. We snuggled a lot when we got home!

Traveling Made Easy with Adventures in Odyssey!

Every road trip we takes starts out about the same. We pile in, pray for our trip, and turn on Adventures in Odyssey! We used to travel with our entire case of every Adventures in Odyssey set, but now with the Adventures in Odyssey Club we will usually load on several episodes and listen that way. It’s also nice at bedtime when we are away. The girls are always excited and sometimes have a hard time settling in to sleep. Not to mention the grown ups stay up late playing games, which aren’t always so quiet! This helps them not mind going to bed before the rest of us do.

On this trip we were very excited to get to hear the beginning of the newly released episodes! We left on a Thursday and returned on a Thursday which is release day for the newest episodes. If you haven’t had a chance to try out the club this is a great time because you will get to hear the newest episodes before anyone else!
Even when the girls fall asleep (2 out of three here!) my husband and I still enjoy listening to Adventures in Odyssey. It’s a great way to be entertained and we didn’t even bring a DVD player for the 13 hour drive this time! Our favorites are the sagas… Novacom, Dr. Blackguard, The Green Ring Conspiracy, etc. This time we were listening to the Blackguard episodes. So fun every time!
What is your favorite Adventures in Odyssey for a road trip?

Week in Review: July 23-27

See how tanned my girlies are? (Well, not the puppy!) They are tanned and tired after our week in Florida, so we did some schooling-lite… reading, math, historical biographies…and video schooling! One of my favorite tools this year has been using our Ruko device to access some great educational programming. We stream from a variety of apps as well as with my husband’s Chrome Book so we can access the videos on SchoolhouseTeachers! It’s a great way to supplement learning, especially when the summer afternoons are so hot and everyone is feeling just sort of drab.

I also taught Grace how to play the game Carcassonne. She loves new games. Rose found my to-do list one day and added “Play Games with the girls” to the bottom of it. Sometimes I need a little reminder to have some fun and just relax. These three sweeties are good to remind me!
My girls will be spending this coming week with my parents and they are really excited!
How was your week?
