Super Beads from Zirrly: A TOS Crew Review

My girls absolutely love craft kits! They will all tell you their favorite part of Vacation Bible School is the crafting. I like for the kits my girls to use to be pretty self-sufficient. I’m happy to jump in and help with instructions, but the point is for them to create, not watch me create a kid craft for them! Zirrly sent us the Birds package from their Super Beads product line. The girls were super excited when they opened the mailed package that day and saw they would be creating these:
These are a product similar to those little beads you iron after creating patterns, but as I said I like for the crafts to be self-sufficient. While my 12-year-old is at the point I would be okay with her using an iron, my younger two are definitely not there yet. The fun thing about these projects is that the beads only need water to adhere to one another. Give it a little drying time and, voila! You have a completed project that stands on its own.

This set comes with 2 clear, plastic grids and 3 different patterns which lay under them. The girls then placed the beads on the grid according the pattern. It is easy to see and easy to follow!

It’s a really good idea to make sure your kids hands are VERY dry, not damp from just washing or sweaty at all. Because these adhere together with liquid their hands can make them start to melt if they aren’t completely dry.

You can see how small this is for little fingers. If your kids are younger than the recommended age, it may be a bit tedious and frustrating. There is a tool which can help to pick the beads back up and replace them if you put one down in error, but this can sometimes cause the other beads to come up too.

We did have a bit of a learning curve after they had been sprayed. With our first attempt we sprayed too much water, so after waiting the initial 60 minutes they were falling apart and not coming off well at all! We waited quite a bit longer and then they came off okay. With the following one we sprayed much less, but they didn’t adhere together very well. It seems that it was better to over-wet the product and just be patient enough for it to dry. Our best results getting them off the grids occurred after waiting overnight. We had 1 or 2 beads which came off in these attempts, but they were quite easy to fix with a little drop of water and setting the bead back in place.

Overall, my girls enjoyed this craft kit. The issue with getting them off the grid was minor and didn’t deter them from having fun or enjoying the final outcome.

One of the fun things about crafting is getting to hear the conversations my girls have while working. While they are doing the projects individually, they are still having together time. There is rarely any bickering because they focus on their own task, but still engage with one another. I often hear compliments of how nice another’s project looks and sometimes just sweet little girl chatter. Conversation around the table is a beautiful thing to watch!

Á La Carte Products from Home School in the Woods: A TOS Crew Review

When it comes to printable learning units, lapbooks, and historical timelines there is none better than Home School in the Woods! They have a long-standing reputation among the homeschool community for good reason. Their products are consistently high quality and the end results are projects and timelines which both students and parents want to keep for years to come. We were excited to review products from the Á La Carte line. We enjoyed reviewing the Taxation Frustration! Game, the Pirate Panoply Game, and The Art of Quilling (3D) project. Taxation Frustration! Game Both Grace and Rose have been studying the American Revolutionary Period this school-year. This is Grace’s first time through this portion of history and this game in particular was an excellent way to help explain the issue of taxation.

Grace prepped this game completely on her own!

The concept of the game is very simple and doesn’t take long to play, but clearly explains in its simple way how frustrating the taxation issues were to the colonists. My favorite part was that we had printed copies of what the money actually looked like. The girls thought this was really fun and asked if they could use it to play with after we were done with the game! Pirate Panoply Game This game covered the attire traditionally worn by pirates! We enjoyed a fun trip to the coast of North Carolina a couple of springs ago and learned much about the legend and lore of piracy along the Outer Banks. This was a great way to review some of the information we learned and have a lot of fun playing the game! Beth in particular is fascinated by clothing worn in different eras and walks of life so she was very excited about this.

The girls really enjoyed coloring their individual pirates and his clothing items. The game was again quite simple, but taught the costuming quite effectively. We had fun and they played it a few times.

The Art of Quilling (3D) Rose dreams of being an artist and art teacher and she is always intrigued by new art forms. Learning about this art form and its popularity in the American Colonies was great timing to pair art with her history focus for the year. She thoroughly enjoyed this project and I was quite impressed with her final product!

She told me she would like to do this again with a new pattern and imagine we will see quite a bit of quilling projects in the coming weeks.I really love this 3D art and might just want to try it myself!

In addition to these beautiful projects and I have quite a few more on my wish list! These are wonderful additions to whatever unit you are studying! They are also a great way to prepare for field trips or special learning experiences. I am hoping to use The Passover Seder Game as a part of our family’s yearly Passover tradition the week before Easter. The World War II resources will be an excellent addition when we study that era. I particularly like The Bombing of Pearl Harbor Lapbook Project and the WWII: On The Homefront Lapbook/Notebook Project. You will love browsing all that is offered through the Á La Carte projects! Peek at our Week: March 12-16

We will be taking next week off for our spring break and I believe knowing that caused for great diligence in school this week. I hope we will be taking some fun field trips close to home but mostly just taking a break from our normal.

Grace (2nd Grade): Bigger Hearts for His Glory Unit 19

This week Grace studied more about the westward exploration of the United States and looked at some of the western geography. She’s continuing to dive into multiplication. When I let her choose her next literature book herself this week she picked the longest book we own, the first in the Epic Order of the Seven series. She’s heard wonderful things about it from her older sisters and I told her as long as it was something she wanted to read I was happy for her to do so. I love how Grace constantly challenges herself.

We have had a very wet, cold winter. Grace enjoys being very active and it is good for her to have some time outside for a break most days. She hasn’t been able to enjoy this as much since Christmas. We are all looking forward to some warmer, drier weather hopefully coming our way soon!

Beth (5th Grade): Creation to Christ Unit 26

Beth quietly settles into her work each day. She prefers to do all of her independent work first if possible. She seems to work best first thing in the morning. I will often get up and find she has been up for 30 minutes or more already hard at work. The time change has put a bit of a kink into her schedule however. I’m hoping the week of break will help us get a bit more settled into our sleeping patterns. I really struggle to adjust to the time change in the spring and always have. I think she is like me in that way.

She asked me Thursday if she could switch her Bible study to something different. She had a study on prayer we started in the summer, but hadn’t yet finished. She told me how much she enjoyed it and really wanted to do that instead. I usually want the girls to follow the guide, but when any of the girls has an interest in a particular Bible study, I listen and will usually acquiesce. I’ve seen her grow so much in her faith over the last few months after her unexpected and unexplained illness last fall. My heart smiles when I see her excited about studying God’s Word on her own.

Rose (7th Grade): Revival to Revolution Unit 11

Rose’s studies this year have focused heavily on the revolutionary period so far. This week she learned about Daniel Boone and a little bit about Russia during that time period. She finds it all fascinating! She gets so excited to tell me what she is reading about.

She is continuing on with All About Spelling. We are getting close to the end of level 5. This has been the greatest blessing to her! We are thrilled with the new app and use it exclusively for AAS lessons now. She is also learning both biblical Greek and Spanish this year by her choice on the side. She asked for lessons in both. We are using Hey Andrew for Greek and SchoolhouseTeachers for Spanish. Both are excellent programs and a great way for her to test the waters with these languages.

MathArt Online 4-Class Bundle from NatureGlo’s eScience: A TOS Crew Review

At some point in their education just about every student asks the question, “When will I ever use this in real life?!?!” This is especially true about math and most often when it is a difficult concept. I don’t always know how to answer that question to be perfectly honest. I did well in math through school, but it was never easy. I struggled to attain strong grades once reaching mathematics classes beyond geometry. I was excited for Rose to have the opportunity to try out the MathArt Online 4-Class Bundle from NatureGlo’s eScience for this very reason. She is much like me in how she processes mathematics I know it is important for her to see connections in real life! I also know how much she relates to art while learning and was excited to see her dive into one of the courses. She has been working through Math Connections with the Real World for the last several weeks.
One of the aspects I really enjoy about this program is that it is online. Our daughters have large screen tablets with attachable keyboards and we use these more and more for schoolwork. We use a white-list web browser that allows me to input specific web addresses, so this is how we handled this class. Rose was able to login on her own and complete the work at her own pace. She is getting older and so much of education is transitioning to online content. I love giving her opportunities like this to learn how to best learn with online coursework.

We both really liked the video content. Even though Rose worked on this independently I took some time to view the videos as well. They were interesting and engaging. I found the teaching to be clear and left me wanting to continue watching and learn more! Rose told me she likes that the teacher explains things multiple ways and included lots of examples.There are also nicely presented slide presentations for each unit as well as extension activities, projects and web resources for anyone who wants to dig deeper.

In addition to the fabulous online content there are printable resources as well. I liked the written material as a reference point for Rose, but she mostly enjoyed the videos. The other thing loved was the quizlet at the end of each unit! Rose thought these were fun as well. They are not traditional math quizzes at all and she found them to be enjoyable.
The units contain literature, historical, and scientific connections. This usually includes some artistic references which really engages Rose! She is very excited to continue the rest of the courses this year and I’m thrilled. She doesn’t usually love her math work and this is a great addition to our regular math curriculum. I like the looks of Mathematics in the Arts & Sciences as I know how much she likes history. The variety of historical art and science connections throughout these lessons look fascinating! I’m also anxious to have her complete MathArt in Ancient Cultures. I know it will interest her and seeing the beauty and intelligence of the ancients is truly fascinating. This will also compliment the study of ancient cultures Beth is completing this year so I intend to have her join in the fun!

Initially the page setup for the course confused me a little and I wasn’t completely certain what to print for Rose. After a short learning curve it did become more clear to me and we flowed smoothly through.

Teach Them Diligently by Leslie Nunnery: A NLPG Review Crew Review

I’m not sure if every generation feels this way, but raising kids seems harder than ever. Parents are constantly undermined at every turn. The values we instill at home and in church are mocked outside those walls. The availability of depravity is at an all-time high with an ease of accessibility which boggles, and terrifies, the mind. So what do we do?

We pray, arm ourselves with the truth, and teach our children diligently.

The newest title from New Leaf Publishing Group, Teach Them Diligently: Raising Children of Promise by Leslie Nunnery, is an excellent resource for any parent of this age. This timely book will encourage you to grow closer to the Lord as you continue to move forward on your parenting journey. It is not a how-to book in a formulaic way so as to produce perfect parents. Rather you will find within these pages practical ways to intentionally disciple the precious little humans entrusted to your care for such a time as this.

You will be encouraged by what God’s Word has to say about parenting and how to keep this perspective in a society which constantly diminishes the role and authority of parents. Nunnery reminds us that parenthood is a calling. Wow…that is something I need to hear on the hard days that feel as if they will never end. We were never promised an easy road in life or parenting, but we do have the Holy Spirit to guide and direct our paths. The most important part about this book is how Nunnery urges the reader to search their heart before the Lord and make sure they are parenting in the right spirit, recognizing this as perhaps the most important part of the parenting mandate in Scripture.

Just as important as teaching our children is listening to our children, hearing what the Lord is doing in their little hearts and helping them along their own life journey. I love that this particular part of parenting is addressed as one of the most important parts of parenting throughout the chapters. Also sharing with our children our own stories and testimonies of faith. We must be faithful in giving God the glory for His goodness and generosity to us in front of our children. The author tells a story her parents shared with her when she was growing up that greatly impacted her about God’s provision in what seemed to be a very small matter and how this story impacted her own faith. We strive to do the same and it is good to be reminded why it matters!

This is one of the deepest, most beneficial books on parenting I have come across because it has nothing to do with behavior or rules, although both are aspects of parenting. This book is all about my heart before the Lord, making certain my ways are straight so I can effectively disciple my children. I know many, many parents of my generation who were raised attending church, but have drifted away from belief in God. While every child must choose for themselves whether or not to follow the Lord, I cannot help but wonder how many parents never dealt with their own hearts first or never intentionally discipled in the home.

My prayer is that I may never be as stumbling block to the faith of my children. This beautiful book will help that be your prayer as well.

Writing Strands from Master Books: A Review of the Updated Material

I’m an English teacher and writer. Teaching my daughters to write at home seemed like it would be a piece of cake. Imagine my surprise when it wasn’t! My background in middle-grades education left me ill-equipped to know how to teach writing in the early years. I browsed lots of curricula, but nothing felt right. It was all so complex and overwhelming to me… The ENGLISH teacher! I knew there must be something simpler available. Then I discovered the Writing Strands series through Master Books! I was hooked from the moment I opened the package. Its simple and efficient format led me to not only love it for myself, but recommend it to everyone who asks my thoughts on writing.

I wrote my initial review in the fall of 2016. Since then Master Books has worked to revise the curriculum and republish it for their customers. WOW! The updates are incredible and only make me love the program more. We received Writing Strands: Beginning 1 and Writing Strands Beginning 2.

Here are some of the fabulous updates…

1. Daily Schedule – The format has been simplified even more so that it is easy to assign work each week. The original format was a little wordy. This new streamlined format and scheduling guide makes the excellent content all the more user friendly.

2. Work-pages – Whether you purchase the traditional book or e-book format you will find that most of your student’s writing can occur right on the page. This is nice for kids who need less clutter on their desks and a more defined work-space.

3. Assessments – Writing assessments are available to the student to fill out for their own writing. Again, this was also included in the original version, but having a page ready to go is very helpful.

4. Updated Level Breakdown – I think the new levels are a bit more understandable because they do not feel as tied to grade-level as the original books do. There is also a separate, updated teacher’s edition which is helpful to parents. The following levels are currently available:

Beginning 1 (5th-8th)

Beginning 2 (5th-8th)

Intermediate 1 (6th-9th)

Intermediate 2 (6th-9th)

Advanced 1 (High School)

Advanced 2 (High School

Although these are the recommended grades, I am using Beginning 1 with my 2nd grader who was already forming simple sentences. As with all things, assess your child’s ability and choose accordingly. For writers not quite yet ready for Beginnings 1, I highly recommend the original Writing Strands: Level 1. It’s a great way to help your child think creatively and begin to learn about the writing process while having a ton of imaginative fun!

5. Literature Woven is Throughout – In the previous books the literature study was a separate book which parents would read and learn about for themselves, then teach their children from that knowledge. I love that the writing and literature units are included in the new books. They are scheduled to be used on alternating weeks, but we tend to do a unit of each at the same time. There are also work-pages for this portion as well.

6. Biblical Worldview – There was nothing unbiblical in any way with the original versions, but as with all Master Books materials the company has intentionally included Scripture as a part of the studies. This is done in a lovely way which addresses character and heart issues while still fully exploring literary elements and writing prompts.

Overall Assessment

My overall assessment has not changed except that I love the program even more! My oldest and youngest are continuing to write on their own outside of scheduled school time and their writing is at a very high level. My middle daughter is more of a math-girl, and she too is excelling with the program. Because of the step-by-step nature of Writing Strands they learn about the building blocks of writing in a very meaningful way which is transferring well to other areas.

The girls were recently assessed with Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities. Their scores on writing blew me away and I credit it to our use of Writing Strands and reading lots of rich literature. Below are how my girls scored on the writing assessment.

My 2nd grader: 7th grade

(While my middle daughter is advanced, she had some health issues this fall that put her schooling on hold for a couple of months and we’d just gotten back to pushing at our regular pace about the time she tested. Since this official test I have seen a greater jump in her writing ability once we were again using Writing Strands.)

It is imperative for the writing lessons a child completes to apply to other areas. This curriculum is gentle and will not feel excessive, which is perfect. The current trend in public school education is to get children to write more, more, more. While there is truth in the fact that writers become more skilled in their craft the more they practice, elementary school is not the place to apply this principle! I firmly believe this course will suit everyone’s writing needs no matter what ability level.

Other than ending our week with a few sniffles from a cold we’ve had a good week! Not thrilled with this VERY cold weather here in the south. We even saw a few snowflakes yesterday. This is crazy weather! The girls were all very focused this week and we ended school by lunch almost every day. This week was gloriously uneventful in my book!

Grace (2nd Grade): Bigger Hearts for His Glory Unit 18

I LOVED reading about Robert Fulton and his invention of the steam boat this week! The second half of the Bigger guide is my favorite. Lots of wonderful peeks into the inventive progress of early America. We will also soon touch on some of the less desirable things about this age, like slavery. It is so hard to talk about these things, but so necessary for our children to learn.

We have been working this year as well on improving handwriting. Grace does very well with her formal handwriting books, but it hasn’t been translating into her written work. Hopefully we can shore up this area soon.

Beth (5th Grade): Creation to Christ Unit 25

Beth is working on remembering what she reads for longer periods of time. If she is interested in a subject this is not a problem, but with topics she finds boring she reads just for the moment and often loses the information soon after. She does not have any learning struggle in any area and I think part of the problem is that school comes so easily to her she doesn’t really have to work for it. Using the Heart of Dakota notebooking pages gives her a chance to review what she has learned and be able to tell me more about it at the end of the week.

She’s studying the Roman battles and conquest of territory, so honestly, I don’t blame her lack of interest. I think she will find the next guide to be more intriguing. In math she is studying factor trees which she finds extremely fun.

Rose (7th Grade): Revival to Revolution Unit 11

Rose seems to find every aspect of history interesting no matter what it is. This year the Revolutionary War has captivated her imagination. I opted for a different book for storytime than the one suggested because I was having trouble tracking it down used and I don’t usually buy our materials new except for our guides. She is enjoying Johnny Tremain as a substitute. I read it when I was about her age and I’m glad to share the story with her as well. We will probably watch the old Disney move once she finishes.

She is drifting more and more towards writing rather than art. I love to see her enjoy this, but miss seeing her drawings. It isn’t that she doesn’t enjoy art, but she seems more interested in crafting stories at the moment. She is an excellent writer and I want to encourage this pursuit. Interests ebb and flow at this age so we will see where this may lead. Maybe she will write and illustrate her own book one day!

Our lives have really calmed down this week. No more basketball or cheer practices or games for either Rose or Grace. Now all three of my gals are participating in clogging like Beth did last year! They are excited to be doing this together and I will share pictures with our various performances as they come along. All three practicing at the same time on the same day is so simple and it is extremely fun to see them experience something new!

Magic Stix Washable Markers from The Pencil Grip, Inc.: A TOS Crew Review

When it comes to art supplies we homeschoolers can be pretty picky. When we spend our money we try to go for quality, knowing that we want the supplies to last a long time. In my opinion Magic Stix Washable Markers from The Pencil Grip, Inc. are an excellent investment for your homeschool or non-homeschooling family! There are some reasons these particular markers are superior to others we’ve used. One is the fact that they don’t have an odor and are still vibrant. Some typical brands with very vibrant colors have an incredibly strong odor which honestly gives me a headache. Other popular brands don’t have a strong odor, but the color is lackluster or fades after a while. These beautifully bold colors don’t smell at all and still retain a bright color. Another incredible feature of these is that they don’t dry out quickly! In fact, they can last 7 days without the cap on…7 DAYS! I know I am not the only mom out there who has sighed at finding a maker leftover from a fun art activity on the floor without a cap and if not completely dried out, it was well on its way. It is so disheartening to spend my money on product and through the inevitable course of events of childhood have to throw away those products. It feels like I’m throwing my money away. There is no need to feel this way any longer. It’s easy to see if you have forgotten a marker when putting the case away and even if you do inadvertently miss it and the cap happens to be off, no sweat!

This crew of kids were my testers for these excellent markers. My nieces and nephews spent a weekend with us and we had the chance to take them to my oldest daughter’s last basketball game of the season. We thought it would be fun to make signs to cheer her on!

With this many kids working and passing markers around I was thankful for the case to make sure we got them all back. It’s much easier to notice in here than it is in a traditional marker box. I also really like the nice handle which makes it easy to transport.

The markers are available to purchase in packages of 12 and 24 and worked beautifully for these kids (Kindergarten-7th grade) for detailed work. My own kids are in second, fifth, and seventh grades. They love to color and draw with markers. They love art projects and creating. Whether our projects are everyday fun or something planned ahead of time we will continue to return to this set for their wonderful quality.

Here are all the kids with their fabulous homemade signs. These wonderful kiddos cheered Rose on with these signs and some really fun basketball cheers. They had some great compliments from other spectators!

I think the signs encouraged her! She sunk this basket along with several others and her team one!

I have already recommended these markers to friends and will continue to do so! I think these are the highest quality markers I have used in our home.

CursiveLogic Quick-Start Pack and The Art of Cursive from CursiveLogic: A TOS Crew Review

Teaching cursive is traditionally done through tracing or copy worksheets and without much guidance for the teacher. Many times these courses proceed in alphabetical order or by clustering vowels and consonants. I have both completed these types of courses myself and gave them to my daughters. I had no idea there was any different way. Then I was sent CursiveLogic Quick-Start Pack and The Art of Cursive by CursiveLogic. I have to confess I was completely blown away by this program! I think so highly of it, this will be the only program I recommend for teaching cursive from now on. So what makes this program so special? Well, there are quite a few things. The first is the way in which the letter structures are taught. Below is an example of how letters are grouped The Orange Oval Letters are formed with the same unique beginning stroke pattern. Combining these together provides a continuity for learning like I’ve never seen. Other programs do teach the basic strokes, but I have not come across one that connect them together in a string and teaches them at the same time. The combined use of multi-sensory tools including color, touch, auditory, and verbal devices aid in creating a firm memory for students. I’m a firm believer in using as many senses as possible when learning and especially for things which need fast recall. I use this same approach for other subjects, but it never occurred to me that the same could be applied to teaching cursive.

Grace enjoyed completing the pages assigned for each day. You may use this program at a faster or slower pace, but we followed the set structure and I found it to be quite good for her age at eight-years-old. She was neither overwhelmed, nor desiring to move at a faster rate. Because the letters start out larger, she felt more in control of her learning.

The other really awesome part of this program is the webinar! My college degree is in middle-grades education. I was taught how to teach math and reading. I was also required to complete a traditional cursive course, yet no one taught me how to teach. I love this resource as a mom and a teacher. My favorite homeschooling resources are those which teach me how to teach. The other aspect of this program is a beautiful adult coloring book with an amazing little secret! The detailed patterns follow the same curves needed for learning cursive. This little gem is an incredible follow up to the course and a great refresher for adults and older students!

I love that there are beautiful quotes included as a part of these pages for tracing. I found myself to be a bit out of practice using traditional cursive! As most people do I have come to have my own way of connecting and creating letters. While this is not surprising, I would like to have prettier handwriting.

I do not personally color the entire page with these kinds of coloring books, but there is LOTS of space for those kids who like to fill it all! You can see from the close up above some of the cursive lettering curve patterns. When I completed this page I followed a traditional cursive style in those spaces and found it to be a smooth, quick way to fill in the spaces.
