Week in Review: July 16-20 (Vacation!)

Our week was full of fun in the sun in Florida! We had a last minute opportunity to visit with my in-laws. They are the primary care-givers to my husband’s Gram who has Alzheimer’s. It is difficult for company to come when she is with them, but several of my husband’s aunts took over for a week so we could come visit and help get a few things more functional for Gram to live with them. But it wasn’t all work and no play! We had a great time!

The main project was enlarging the patio into a level area and adding a ramp so Gram can be taken in her wheelchair outside. You can see in the below picture the original concreted area in front of the door. This will hopefully be a big blessing she and my mother-in-law can enjoy!

  Finished result!

Some other projects included moving her bed into the living room for easier access in and out. That happened after we left because were sleeping in her bed for the week.

We love playing games when we get together! This is Bid-a-Trick. We learned a new game called Azul that we are excited to purchase for ourselves!

The kids had fun in Grampy and Grammy’s backyard pool.

We also went to a really fun local water park. It isn’t huge, but the kids had fun on the slides and loved this waterfall area…especially Grace!

Since it rained here on July 4th we brought our fireworks and enjoyed them with the rest of the family.

It was a great week away and we were so glad we had to chance to be of some help since we can’t do very much most of the time. We throughout the day for Gram and my in-laws as they care for her. Their sacrifice and love are such a testimony to everyone who knows them.

Week in review: July 9-13

Our relaxing summer has turned into a whirlwind of traveling! It’s good, but a week or two home and then  week away wears on me a little. Still I wouldn’t trade it. We have the wonderful opportunity last minute to visit with my in-laws. Because my husband’s grandmother has Alzheimer’s and his parents are her primary caretakers we did not think we were going to make it to Florida. I’m so grateful we have this chance to spend with them coming up very soon!

Because of our upcoming trip we took this week pretty easy.
We spent some times at our neighborhood park…

…started watching one of my favorite series, Road to Avonlea
…and prepped for our trip! The girls opted for a screen-free ride on their own so I gathered up a bunch of trivia (Bible, Disney, Adventures in Odyssey, etc.) and some other games, printed some fun travel games (bingo and license plates), and packed our Adventures in Odyssey for listening. The best part was that no one got car sick!

So no school this week…are you schooling, or are you on break?

Week in Review: July 1-7

We had quite a busy week! I had the girls work on school Monday and Tuesday because too much “off routine” leads to excessive amounts of bickering and generally driving me to Crazy Town!

We had dinner with dear friends on Tuesday evening who live in Atlanta and were in town for the week. Wednesday was busy with celebrating with my parents and celebrating Beth’s 11th birthday! Her actual birthday is the 5th, but we often celebrate the day before. She was almost a little Yankee-Doodle baby, but held off for one more day.

Thursday was more celebrating of Beth! This time with Blaze Pizza, presents from us, and a nail painting party using Beth’s new nail art kit. It’s bittersweet seeing the gifts we give our girls become more grown up. She still asks for and plays with toys, but her interests are shifting to more grown up things.

Here are a few pictures of the week!

No fireworks photos for this year…yet! It was rainy the evening of the 4th and we usually do the little stand on the ground ones in our driveway, but not this year. We have plans to enjoy them when we get to take a trip to FL to visit family.

How did you celebrate the 4th of July?

Week in Review: May 7-11 (Off Routine)

Post-recital flowers from Daddy!
This week has been off our regular routine. My piano recital was Tuesday night and I have learned from experience not to try and do “full school” as my girls label it. We focused on math, literature, and biographies. It’s a good thing this was the plan because I came down with a cold a couple of days before the recital, pushed hard to get through and then crashed Tuesday night! I’m currently communicating in whispers and hand gestures. This seems to be a rather consistent thing when I get a cold now and I seem to get colds very often around my recital time! I’m not sure if  it is the stress leading into this or not, but I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve been fully healthy at a recital.
These are most of my students! I have 7 more not pictured. One could not come, two are adults I can’t quite convince to play, and the last 4 are my nieces and nephews who live about 3 hours away. Their lessons are weekly via Skype.
I love all of my students so very much, but I have a special place for these three…
Grace: So Long, Farewell from The Sound of Music
Beth: Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah
 Rose: Ashokan Farewell
Our theme was The Sun Moon and Stars. If you have never read the lyrics to Ashokan Farewell it fits beautifully and is one of my favorites!
Anyway, the girls have worked hard while I rested, although no pictures to prove that! We’ve also played some games like Mad-Libs, thanks to my Blackboard from Boogie Board, and watched some television…way more than is typical. Which is exactly why I’m okay with it. The girls have been really sweet and often ask if I need anything. It’s been a special reminder leading into Mother’s Day of how blessed I am.

Take a look at what my Crewmates were up to this week!

Week in Review: April 23-27 (Off Routine)

This week was a bit different. My husband’s cousin planned a surprise party for their grandpa’s 89th birthday. When I know of travel plans in advance I make sure I plan the week differently. Initially I was going to still have full school Monday-Wednesday, but with all that was going on to get ready to go we just did “light school” which was still quite a big of work. We basically just bypassed our history for the week.
We left early Thursday morning about 5:00 am and drove to Washington on the way to our part destination. We surprised our girls with a trip to the National Zoo, specifically to see a panda. Our sweet Beth has wanted to make this trip for a long time and it was something she talked quite a bit about during her hospital stay. We were so excited to have the opportunity to give her this experience!

Wow! These amazing animals were so playful and fun while we were there. Such a unique aspect of God’s creation!
Next, we stopped at the newly opened Museum of the Bible! It was AMAZING!
The girls loved the kids play area. They also loved the town of Nazareth! We enjoyed the encounters with characters from the town.
We also really enjoyed seeing the various artifacts and facsimiles of artifacts. The girls, especially Rose, were super excited to see an entire floor which featured on of our favorite resources, Drive Thru History!

One of the more profound moments for me was seeing the number of languages in which there is no translation of the Bible.
How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!’
 Romans 10:14-15
Then we traveled on to Maryland and waited until Friday evening to surprise Grandpa!
 Surprise!!!!
Kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids all celebrating this wonderful man! He was cherished and well loved this day.
We traveled home today and are enjoying some time with Grampy and Grammy before they travel on to Florida.
We’ve had a busy week and we are all tired! This is going to be another busy week with regular school, preparation for piano recital the next week, and our regular doctor’s physicals for the kids. I’m very excited for summer and a bit of a break from the busyness.
Check out what some of my Crewmates are up to!

Week in Review: April 16-20

Sometimes we sit at desks…sort of! Homeschoolers, go figure, right?

This is the time of year I start to really get stressed. Things are wrapping up with my English class I teach and I am full speed ahead towards my piano recital. I have 27 students participating this year! We are keeping up with our schooling, but I’m also working in the background while the girls study. I haven’t been great at taking pictures this week, but I have a few!
Rose (7th Grade): Revival to Revolution Unit 14

Most of my photos with Rose these days are her working independently. Honestly, this is how homeschooling is working for us right now in middle school. She studies on her own and then we recap together. It’s beautiful really. She is excelling because Heart of Dakota helped me give her the tools she needed to know how to learn instead of merely stuffing facts into her head.
Grace (2nd Grade): Bigger Hearts for His Glory Unit 22
This girl is on the move constantly. The fact that she was studying her weekly memory verse from Proverbs sitting down was a miracle! She’s typically pacing around as she’s working. She’s still getting used to her glasses. They are definitely helping and she really loves them!

Beth (5th Grade): Creation to Christ Unit 29

Beth worked on an acrylic painting as a part of her history project this week. I just realized I think she forgot to finish it! I will have her finish it up tomorrow and post it on Instagram so you can see the finished work. Her water background was gorgeous.
Friday Science
This week Grace taught her sisters what she has been learning about cells in the human body. She loved this project and had a hard time waiting until Friday to make her edible cell!

They then had fun devouring it as soon as it was finished!

This was our week. How was yours?

(Pssst…read through this post to find a special offer just to my readers!)

This is what real-life homeschooling looks like! Sunglasses on her head inside, blankets all over from early morning snuggles, crayons from who knows what, doggy toys scattered around, and still learning happens. We have a schoolroom and the girls each have a desk, but honestly, most of their learning occurs elsewhere. One of my daughters likes order and chooses spots without chaos for her learning. This girl seems to thrive with a little clutter in her world. We have a group “clean up” time all around the downstairs after school is done and before I begin teaching piano lessons.

Here are some more aspects of our week…

Grace (2nd Grade): Bigger Hearts for His Glory Unit 21
When Grace wakes up in the morning she often comes downstairs and snuggles under a blanket. This week was still pretty chilly in North Carolina, so she kept her blanket handy all over the house. This is actually one of Beth’s blankets, but it is super warm and snuggly so we all take turns using it!

Grace enjoys grammar as much as her sisters with Rod and Staff. It usually only takes 10-15 minutes as we do the majority orally and I will often skip over some practice if I know it will be redundant. No matter what the current research says, I see great value in structured grammar lessons and diagramming. Understanding how the sentence parts work together does help in creating new sentences!

In history this week she read about Andrew Jackson. I skipped a lot of this reading. It was violent and dark in a way I didn’t want to delve. I remember skipping most of it with my other two as well. I also don’t particularly care for how positively he is portrayed. There are so many things about this man that does not make him a hero of history. While I am careful about how detailed I present some of the horrible events of our history, I also am honest with my daughters about these events.

Beth (5th Grade): Creation to Christ Unit 28

Here is a close-up of that same scene I have at the top. See what a little cropping can do? She’s working on giant numbers and learning how to use a calculator. Our tablets can do so many things!

We are closing in on the finish line of this guide. She has grown so much this year physically, academically, and spiritually. Ten has been a difficult year for her after her unexpected and unexplained hospital stay in the fall. She is incredibly healthy now and hasn’t had any repeat episodes. We are watchful, knowing there could be an underlying issue, but thankful that at the moment she is living completely normal without any lasting issues.

I’m excited for her to get into the next guide which will focus heavily on the medieval period. I think she will really get into this! We will be reading abridged versions of Shakespeare’s plays over the summer all together which will correlate with her guide next year. I have to admit, I don’t really love Shakespeare, but I adore this title from Usborne! It’s beautiful and I’m enjoying reading it myself first!

Rose (7th Grade): Revival to Revolution Unit 13

Penny is usually hanging around of of my gals during their studies. She loves to snuggle right with them! Rose uses her tablet more and more for school. Since it is larger it works like a mini computer. On this day she was continuing through her Spanish curriculum. She asked to take this foreign language this year because she feels God is calling her to the mission field one day.

She has decided to continue through her history over the summer. I am going to have her read the books and complete the notebooking pages although she may not finish the rest. This way she can be ready to start the next guide in the fall. We have also decided to go ahead and work through a high school English course next year. She’s quite advanced in reading and writing and she is quite excited about the prospect. I’ve been pleased with her diligence this year and she is often done with school early, leaving her time to pursue more interests.

One goal I have given her is to read through our collection of 30 or so abridged classics by the end of the summer. This will give her a working knowledge of quite a bit of literature without needing to delve into all of the books yet. I’ve always been an advocate of abridged classics and think they are excellent ways to introduce these works to kids. I’m also struck that there are many “classic” novels which I think are just awful. Sometimes understanding the story is enough and I don’t think it is necessary to actually read them. I’m also left wondering, who decides what makes a classic? Why are some absolutely horrible novels considered must-reads?

And I leave you to ponder those thoughts. I would love to hear what you think, so comment below!

Take a lot at what some other homeschoolers are doing this week!

Week in Review: April 2-6

Welcome Spring!
Well, kind of…
We are in the throws of So Much Pollen season!  On a side note, if you are in the South and you haven’t yet found. It’s A Southern Thing, you need to right now! This makes me laugh every time and so far it is all very family friendly, quite a feat for online content!

Anyway, on to our week…

We were back up and running with “Full School” as my daughter refer to it. Basically that means everything in our regular schedule. It is good to deviate from the norm whether it is for breaks or reviews. They don’t get bored with routine that way!

Grace (2nd Grade): Bigger Hearts for His Glory Unit 20

Grace is enjoying working through a new study about the human body as one of our reviews. She is devouring the content! She’s very interested in being in the medical field maybe as a nurse or doctor…as long as she doesn’t have to deal with any blood! We will have to see how this works out.

We worked through her other schoolwork without any trouble and had some excitement at the end of the week! I had noticed some thing about her vision that made me want to have her checked out by more than just the screening at our yearly pediatrician’s visit. She had a lot of fun at the appointment and it resulted in this…

Beth (5th Grade): Creation to Christ Unit 27

Beth also went to the pediatric ophthalmologist, but her eyes are fine. I’ve been really pleased to see her put more effort into her handwriting recently. I know all of my girls have the ability to write neatly, but that isn’t always their choice. I really have to keep on to them about this! Does anyone else have this problem, or is it just me?
She’s quickly growing up and I’m starting to see little glimmers of the young woman she’s becoming. She is very much enjoying the Bible study from Kid Niche Christian Books she asked me to work through. I was a little disappointed at first to set aside the study alongside Heart of Dakota, but I’m so glad I said, “Yes.” She is excited to dive into this study like I have not seen her before. If you are interested in what she is going through this study click here to learn more about it! Once she finishes I plan to buy the second part of the study for her.

Rose (7th Grade): Revival to Revolution Unit 12

Rose is working steadily through her studies. As she is working towards finishing up her 7th grade year we have been talking more about high school and what we are planning. These conversations have been good because while her dad and I are ultimately deciding how to handle high school her input for direction is incredibly important to us. We’ve also been having more conversations about her goals and God’s calling on her life. It’s never too young to start these conversations!

We gave our girls some fun chalk supplies this year as Easter gifts. We had some nice weather even if I had to stay inside for most of the time. The girls had fun trying out chalk spray, powdered chalk bombs, and chalk markers. Our driveway never looked so beautiful!

How was your week? You can see what my Crewmates on the Review Crew have been up to this week below!

Week in Review: March 26-30

Our week was lighter than usual school-wise. The girls read literature, biographies, and completed math each day. Wednesday was their science class and we were planning to have our Passover on Thursday, but some other things came up so we postponed that until Friday. Friday night was our Good Friday celebration at church. I love hearing my husband preach. I learn so much under his teaching.
So my kids aren’t as miserable as they look here! They are listening to my husband guiding us through the Passover symbols.
Besides that, we mostly just enjoyed some beautiful warm weather! After no less than three snowfalls in March it was nice to have some t-shirt weather. I know that is probably normal for most of you, but for us in the South this is completely out of the ordinary. It was just really cold and wet and miserable. Yay for warmer air!

We also took advantage of the closing of Toys R Us and the girls spent some of their savings. Rose bought a build-your-own drone kit and has had so much fun with it! I had a friend ask if this was for school or fun. Well, I definitely didn’t assign this as a project, but this hands-on learning opportunity was incredible!

So that was a bit of our unconventional week of learning! We will be back to our normal learning routine Monday. How was your week?

Week in review: March 19-23 (AKA Spring Break!)

Spring Break week was extremely low key around here. We enjoyed some family time together and my favorite part was around the fire pit!
We started Monday touring a small Christian publishing company, New Growth Press. We enjoyed a family drive listening to Adventures in Odyssey and had a great time there!
New Growth Press
The girls helped me with a little decluttering of the schoolroom, specifically the art supplies. We donated a bunch of stuff to my friend’s preschool classroom that we just weren’t going to use and sorted through everything else. Now it is all handy and easy to find. I am just waiting on more tape for my label maker to add the finishing touches. I should have taken a before picture. It is a dramatic overhaul! I know it doesn’t look all that exciting, but it’s exciting to me!

We watched a spring snowfall that didn’t stick and then it warmed up a little! Then it cooled off again for the weekend. Beth had a clogging event downtown and had a great time despite the cold.
Grace’s favorite part was their PJ day. She helped me cook lunch that day in her jammies.
Rose and I enjoyed roasting marshmallows around the fire pit. We had giant marshmallows, toasted them, pulled off the outer toasted shell, then retoasted it. Wow! This was DELICIOUS. I can’t wait to roast marshmallows again.
I did some scrapbooking as well. We will be back at school next week, but not the entire week. We will take Thursday to celebrate Passover and Friday off for Good Friday. It’s going to be a good week leading into our celebration of Resurrection Sunday!
