Thin Stix Creativity Pack from The Pencil Grip, Inc.: A TOS Crew Review

The Pencil Grip, Inc.  My girls love it when I give them supplies for arts and crafts and just let them create with no agenda or purpose or art theory. Kids are incredibly creative and come up with some of the most amazing works of art when we just give them freedom to make. Thin Stix Creativity Pack from The Pencil Grip, Inc. is an incredible tool for this kind of free creativity because they are the most mess-free paints I have ever seen! We had the opportunity to review one of the smaller sets of Thin Stix earlier this year. When I opened the box and the girls saw this amazing box inside they all began jumping up and down begging to open it up!  Thin Stix Creativity Pack  This set of 24 colors will keep your child engaged for a long time! In addition to the vibrant traditional colors there are also neons and metallics.  Thin Stix Creativity Pack

We decided to give rock painting a try with these fun, fast-drying paints. We haven’t tried rock hunting but I know it is all the rage on social media and I thought this could be a fun activity. If we don’t end up hiding any rocks we can just use them in our flower bed.

Grace liked to put lots of layers on her rocks. These this was really good for her style of creativity. are perfect for that because they dry so quickly. You can see she was working on 3-4 rocks at the same time. This is perfect for her personality since she tends to jump from one thing to the next and not having to wait long kept her occupied longer.

I don’t have photos of myself, but I also painted some rocks! These paints just glide on their surface in such a smooth way. They were really enjoyable to use personally. I  Their chunky nature means your projects will not have tiny details, but we just adjusted our expectations and had such a great time using them!

While one might think mess-free paints are more suitable for pre-school and younger elementary students, my 10 and 12-year-old daughters really love them as well. When we were done with our rocks the girls asked if they could keep on creating. This is the sign of a quality product. No matter how much I may love something, if my girls aren’t engaged it really doesn’t meet our needs. Rose is working on a picture of a school bus.

My favorite rocks the girls created were the pepperoni pizza slices! So adorable! My rock was a beach scene that didn’t turn out quite as lovely as their creations. Some other good uses for these would be posters and painting clay projects. We haven’t tried that yet, but I think they would work beautifully.

Although Thin Stix adhere fabulously to porous products like paper, they did have the tendency to wipe off with enough pressure on the rocks. This is no big deal as I usually coat our placing them outside to keep this from happening in the rain.

The girls chatted and created for well over 90 minutes. Wow! Winner in my book!

The Magic Stories from Allsaid & Dunn, LLC, publishers of The Reading Game and authors of the Wordly Wise series: A TOS Crew Review

The Magic Stories {Allsaid & Dunn, LLC. Reviews} Read through to the bottom for a generous coupon code!
I am always excited to find new materials to help with the reading process. My daughters are eager readers, which I try very hard not to take for granted! I recognized not all kids find the process of reading easy nor do all children love to read. Still, anything that will build my daughter’s comprehension is intriguing to me. I was enamored from the first time I laid eyes on The Magic Stories from Allsaid & Dunn, LLC, publishers of The Reading Game and authors of the Wordly Wise series. The Magic Stories {Allsaid & Dunn, LLC. Reviews}  This thoughtfully designed reading program is intended as a follow-up to completed phonics instruction, geared towards grades 2-3, although I feel all elementary students will enjoy these stories and greatly benefit from the activities included. My daughter, Grace, is an 8-year-old 2nd grader who is reading at a 6th grade level. She adored these stories.

These tales are simply delightful and reminiscent of classic children’s literature in both their style and content. I appreciated the more complex sentence structure that is often missing from modern emerging reader books. The type set was also at a good size so as not to overwhelm children of this age while at the same time move them forward from 1-2 sentence-per-page picture books. The downloadable files will work quite nicely on an i-Pad device or they may be printed depending upon your preference. I asked Grace what she preferred and she asked to read them on the iPad. My daughters often read their schoolbooks this way, so it is quite normal. However I really appreciate that they can be printed for the benefit of children who do not need the distraction of the screen and families who prefer as much learning as possible be done without screens.     The Magic Stories {Allsaid & Dunn, LLC. Reviews} The Magic Stories {Allsaid & Dunn, LLC. Reviews}The illustrations in these titles are simply darling! I love that the drawings are simple, black and white lined sketches which allow for the child’s imagination to expand upon what they see. Because the titles are downloadable, they can also be colored after reading. Engaging students with this type of imaginary discovery is another way to help them build comprehension through tactile activity. Again, the illustrations take me back to the more classic style of children’s literature, where kids were encouraged to use their imaginations to visualize the scenes rather than have every aspect already created for them.    Each of the six books comes with comprehension activities, Naughty 40 word cards (think vocabulary building), and a reading comprehension maze to help guide students in their remembrance of the story. I particularly liked the reading comprehension mazes. This unique way to review the story presented the sequential facts in a way that seemed almost like a game board. I also liked the analytical factor involved. We do a lot of narration in our home, so the idea of retelling what she has read is not new to Grace, but this particular way to review the facts was quite new and I loved how well it worked!

When I asked Grace if she liked the stories she said, “Oh yes!” I, as her mom and teacher, loved how innocent and child-like they really were. Even more so I appreciated just how well the activities afterwards benefited her comprehension skills. These are excellent stories for emerging readers and parents will appreciate the good moral teaching which accompanies the tales.  Allsaid & Dunn, LLC is generously offering a 25% discount to my readers! Gospel Tracts and Evangelism Tools Sampler Pack from Let the Little Children Come: A TOS Crew Review

Let The Little Children Come Our girls have grown up learning what the Bible says about our purpose in life. We are to glorify God in all that we do and make every effort to tell others about the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Because this is a part of the culture of our family we talk often about creative way to tell others about salvation and they have participated in various outreach events at our church where this is the key goal. I told them about the opportunity to review the Gospel Tracts and Evangelism Tools Sampler Pack from Let the Little Children Come they were very excited!   Let the Little Children Come Gospel Tracks  This wonderful sampler pack was a joy to explore! The girls had fun reading the various tracts and trying out the hands-on pieces. There are so many options available from this company, but more importantly, these are solid theologically. I appreciate that they are not frightening, but hopeful. Some gospel tracts, while well-meaning, can be so heavy that they produce more fear than understanding about the important decision of salvation for children. While tracts should be honest and truthful about our sinful state, if fear is the driving force for a child, they may miss the beauty of a personal relationship with the Lord.

Some of the tracts are 3D. This is a really neat one that Rose liked. The writing is clear and concise. Perfectly suited for children. The girls said they felt like they would be comfortable using these to share the message of salvation to someone on their own which also told me they understood what it said clearly.

Beth really liked the wordless book beads. They were already familiar with this particular tool of using colors to share the gospel because we have used it before in our children’s services at various times. Beth said it was nice to be able to actually make something and she thought this would be a fun one to use.

This little hands-on tract was a hit with Grace. She liked how fun it was to manipulate and was easy to use to tell the story of salvation. (Rose is the one showing this because Grace was feeling a little shy!) I love that it takes the familiar verse of John 3:16 and illustrates in beautifully. I tried it out and it really is quite fun!

Their absolute favorites were the animated tracts and I have to say, they were some of the coolest I’ve ever seen as well! As you slide a cover piece over the picture it looks as if it is moving. The message again was very clear, but so much more memorable because of this unique feature! As you can see there are many options from this wonderful company. These are great to hand out at fall-festivals or other community events in which your church may have the opportunity to participate. Whenever children are brought into your church you will have the opportunity to share the saving gospel message with them as well as their families. I encourage you to check out these unique tools for this purpose. Check out what my Crewmates have to say!Gospel Tracts and Evangelism Tools {Let the Little Children Come Reviews}Crew Disclaimer

Family Photo Shoot: 2017

I’m going to let you in on a little secret…we don’t pay for family photos. There are some incredibly talented photographers out there and I’m in no way saying I can compare to them in style or creativity or skill. I use my point-and-shoot camera, a tripod, and Photoshop for light editing after taking the photos. I’ve been reading blogs on light-source placement and looking at family photo poses on Pinterst. I’ve also been practicing with the light and color editing features in Photoshop Elements so I can work with our photos more quickly.
Another factor that helps tremendously is that my daughters are getting old enough they will sit still for a timer on our camera. There is no way this could have worked when they were little! We took about an hour and I snapped LOTS of bad shots. But I have learned the more I take, the more options I have and there will probably be something I can use.
I’ve been taking the girls’ photos for the last couple of years and asking others to do the family shots. This is our first try with a tripod for the family pictures and I’m so happy with them! We used the timer feature on my camera a few other times with success at home so I figured it was worth a try. I had to re-position us a few times, but since the girl are older they were a little more patient.
We may not do this every year, but for now it is working and saving us quite a bit of money while still providing yearly location portraits which I wouldn’t trade for anything!

Weave Your Word in Me — Part 1 from Kid Niche Christian Books: A TOS Crew Review

Kid Niche Christian Books Our family has committed to raising our daughters with God’s Word as our guide. We don’t want our children to merely modify their lives to a list of rules. We don’t want them to follow God because we do. Our greatest desire as parents is to see them grow in their relationship with the Lord and serve them with their lives because of their individual desire to follow Him. We are constantly looking for creative, new, and fun ways to make this a reality. Weave Your Word in Me — Part 1 from Kid Niche Christian Books intrigued me. It is geared towards pre-teens (Grades 4-6) which is the exact season I find myself in with my daughters.  *******  This study is a beautifully crafted 36-lesson set which studies the Lord’s Prayer in great depth. I was amazed at just how detailed this study was. Most of the time studies for students in this age are not as deep as I have found this to be. I was very impressed with the biblical detail and while the teaching and explanations were incredibly kid-friendly, they were not in any way watered down.

I had Beth, 10, use this exclusively. She was right in the center of the target age-range and was also very excited to give it a try! She is no stranger to Bible study. As with all of our daughters she has been a part of family devotion time since birth. Beth has studied Scripture in our church and through our children’s program as well as a consistent part of our homeschool. She dove right into this study and right away told me she liked it. When I asked her why she said it was because she could do it herself and that it was easy for her to understand.

This is a self-paced course has an answer key for the 6 most popular translations. My husband uses NASB and the girls memorize their verses out of the NKJV. I really liked that there were several options included with this study. Most other curricula either doesn’t provide a key or requires a particular translation. This flexibility is absolutely wonderful. I love that it is simple fill-in-the blanks for most of the lessons. This is less intimidating and still provides plenty of learning.

Beth was fully engaged while she worked through this study. She often asked if she could do more than one lesson in a day which is a good indicator that she enjoyed what she was doing. I love how Scripture is used to interpret and explain Scripture. This is one of the best indicators of an excellent, in-depth study for adults and I believe this is the first time I’ve seen it applied to a study for children. In addition to the fill-in-the-blanks there are illustrations, cartoons, scripts, multiple choice, true/false, and more. This covers just about every learning style imaginable. While Beth worked on this independently it would be great for a group study either in home or church setting.
My favorite part was having the opportunity to read Beth’s responses in prayer after her time in Scripture. It was such a blessing to have these recorded responses! Sometimes it is hard to know how much of our discipleship and training is reaching the girls’ hearts. These little glimpses inside my girls heart and mind were such a precious thing and this will be something I treasure forever.
I highly, highly recommend this study. I have used and observed more Bible studies than I can recall for both kids and adults.  I can this study is not only one of the most engaging I have come across, but also the most thorough.

Six Month Membership from Reading Eggs: A TOS Crew Review

Reading Eggs When I first learned of Reading Eggs a few years ago my girls were already strong readers. I still took a look at the website and was impressed with what I saw. I’ve since recommend  the program to many friends and they have raved about it! I was very excited to learn that there was much more to Reading Eggs than when I first looked at it many years ago. Both Beth (10) and Grace (8) had the chance to use Reading Eggspress and absolutely love it!
You can get a 4 month free-trial with Reading Eggs by clicking here!  Reading Eggs*  There is so much to explore on the Reading Eggs website. The most exciting portion is the latest update for homeschoolers. Within this section is full, 36-week lesson plans for kindergarten, first, and second grades. They are very thorough and cover all four core subjects: language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. The material needed within the various disciplines are available on the website within the library and included with the subscription. If you are looking for an online curriculum for your younger students I highly recommend checking this out.

These smiles can tell you just how much my girls loved using Reading Eggs. It is the first thing they ask to use each day. Honestly, I don’t think they realize that it is a learning program. They really look at it as a fun game. Because of this I used it as a reward for completing the rest of their work. They have never worked quite so fast!  After completing the assigned reading passage or lesson they would take assessments to see how well they recalled the information they were taught. I love that I can check their progress and see how well they are progressing. I can see their assessment scores and check to make sure they are moving forward in their learning. I have been happy to see them progress throughout their time using it so far.

Beth was excited to show me her Avatar (personalized character). She loved that it had a little panda purse because that is her favorite animal! Another aspect which is really nice is printable worksheets for each lesson. These can be used as supplements to the lessons and can be very valuable for families using this as their main reading program. I found them to be very well done and thorough. I personally like to have options which will allow off-screen assessment and practice so this is excellent for those who like to have that ability.

Even when they weren’t using Reading Eggs themselves these two were often sitting side-by-side watching the other one work! Rose (12) was even intrigued by the fun graphics and style of learning.   The only part I did not care for was teaching slang as vocabulary. For instance, in one story the word “sick” is used and they were supposed to identify the definition based on context. I absolutely love the fact that it teaches inference. I am not thrilled that this is taught by using slang. I personally feel there is better use of instructional time than this.   While my girls clearly enjoyed it and I do think the reading comprehension assessments are highly useful, this would be best suited for families with younger children or less advanced readers. I also know many who love to have their children’s learning online for a variety of reasons, but that is typically not my preference. I will absolutely recommend this to families looking for online learning options because although it is not my personal preference for the majority of my girls’ learning, this is one of the best and full programs with which I’ve had the opportunity to work.   Take a look at what my Crewmates have to say! Week in Review: October 9-13

We had a FULL week! One of our dear friends from when you lived in Florida came to stay with us for a few days. Mrs. Kate is a folk singer who is also a pastor’s wife in our denomination. While she was here my dear Rose was able to work for her as her roadie! She had a great time and learned so very much. We were able to be there for a couple of the shows and that was a great experience too. Our week was crazily off schedule, but we still got through all of our work.

Grace – 2nd grade: Bigger Hearts for His Glory Unit10

I know every week I say how easy Grace is to teach. She just really is! She loves to learn. Her latest “favorite” (according to her) is grammar! We are just using the standard Rod and Staff. I’ve used it with all three girls and it is incredibly solid. There aren’t frills, but that has never been a problem. We usually complete 2/3 of the lesson orally as suggested by Heart of Dakota. This is the key to its success I think. Too much writing and you just kill the lesson. They only have a small portion to actually write. For my older girls this is usually 5-10 sentences diagrammed. Now, current trends say that diagramming has zero value. I completely disagree! Current trends also say learning math facts shouldn’t be about memorization and I disagree there as well. And so we have an example of why homeschooling is beautiful for us. We don’t have to follow the trends!
She continued with her history study of Benjamin Franklin this week. I’m pleased with how her oral narration is coming along. Of course this is my daughter who loves to talk so I’m not really all that surprised she is able to narrate beautifully. Her reading comprehension is off the charts so this is a super easy area for her. Handwriting is the only area she seems to dread. Although she never complains I can tell it is her least favorite part. We are plugging away at cursive anyway!
Rose – 7th Grade: Revival to Revolution Unit 2

This is what Rose was doing most of the day! She worked with Mrs. Kate at both preschool and senior shows and had a blast. I love that she is so comfortable with people of all ages. I’m not going to say this is because of homeschooling because I think it is much more from being a part of a multi-generational church that is small enough for her to get to know everyone. We also worship all together as families. These factors give her opportunity to build relationships with people of all ages, stations of life, and ethnic backgrounds. Homeschooling did, however, allow her the flexibility to do this where traditional schooling would not have.
My girl also learned that she can work ahead if she wants. The history and literature portions were the easiest to complete ahead of time. She then asked if she could work ahead other times. I told her of course and she lit up! She is beginning this guide with early American per-revolutionary history, one of her favorite periods to study. This is also fun because Grace is studying the same period.
She also got through all of her other language arts and mathematics work for the week!
Beth – 5th Grade: Creation to Christ Unit 16
Beth had a great non-complaining week! Perhaps simply being back on track wit our schedule is enough to keep her complaint free. We have been practicing better responses and that has helped.
She is studying ancient cultures still and is doing very well. I think she will enjoy the next guides more having seen Rose go through them. She has particularly enjoyed that I’m scheduling foreign language studies. they all three work on sign language (pictured here) and a language of their choice. She has chosen French and is using DuoLingo. I can’t rave enough about how great that program is!
Mathematics continues to be a breeze and she sails through her studies without any trouble. She has the mind of an engineer although she doesn’t really have any interest in it. I found out this week that in Sunday school class they used straws to see how high of a tower they could build while studying the Tower of Babel and she was able to build the tallest! Their class is mixed of all ages and several of the kids are older than her so that impressed me quite a bit. It’s a skill in which she succeeds, but since she doesn’t find it interesting it is hard to know how to nurture it. This is something I’m going to be considering.
