Week in Review: July 17-21

Lots of good learning happened this week! But no pictures. I just got busy and the camera never came out. Oh well!
The girls are working on lots of math, literature of their choice, a biography of their choice, and we are memorizing the states by region on the map as well as their capitals. We started in New England and they have mastered the first 6 with ease. We are enjoying working with some material we are reviewing and just in general having a great summer break from our “routine” curriculum. Experience has taught me that by mid-August the break will have served its purpose and we will all be ready to be back on schedule with Heart of Dakota.
These days are bittersweet in so many ways as my girls are getting older. Two daughters in double digits can make my heart squeeze sometimes, but we are also enjoying one another greatly. We are playing lots of games. Yahtzee is the current favorite. Our neighborhood has a pool and we are taking full advantage of that. Even with the wicked hot summer days we have been having the morning and evenings are still a good time to swim. We are laughing and playing and generally just having fun. This doesn’t mean there aren’t those moments
You know the ones. The ones when Mommy has to give the look, the ones when one of the three is angry at another, or when I have to say for the 4th time to do a very simple task from around the house. Those moments are still happening regularly, but I’m sensing a shift in the relationship with my daughters. They are still my little girls in so many ways, but more and more we are having deeper, longer conversations. I treasure these in my heart and when it starts to squeeze with the bittersweet thoughts of my girls growing up I push them away with prayer and memories of the sweet moments we are having.

Trust Fund from Mapelle FIlms: A TOS Crew Review

Mapelle FilmsMy husband and I really enjoy movies. Our date nights are often in the evenings after the girls have gone to bed and we stick in a movie to watch together. We are incredibly picky about what we view and use a filtering system because most of the new movies out there contain quite a bit of material we just don’t care to hear or see. We are always excited when a Christian puts out a new movie because we don’t have to worry so much about content. It is exciting to see newcomers to the industry using their God-given talents to produce something that is honoring to Him. This is absolutely the case with Trust Fund  from Mapelle Films. We had a really nice evening-in one weekend while my girls were with my parents having dinner and watching this great movie!

Trust Fund Movie

Trust Fund is a modern, prodigal story. Reese Donahue, played by Jessica Rothe is the heiress to a fortune and is frustrated by her lack of success as a writer. As she approaches desperation we see Reese make some really bad decisions that will only serve to alienate herself from her family.     This movie is engaging and funny, and we both enjoyed it. While it is not the typical action and adventure feature my husband enjoys, it was a great date movie for the two of us. The acting was very good and the characters were completely believable in their roles. There is also an element of intrigue and adventure towards the end as well.  I enjoy a good romantic movie and this is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. A big reason was there was absolutely nothing I felt uncomfortable watching. I also would be completely comfortable having my daughters watch along with us and plan to do so. I do think it may be a little grown up for all three of them in that they may not find it interesting, but I wouldn’t be opposed to them watching it for any reason.  I was pleased to see an actress from one of my favorite miniseries, the BBC version of Emma. Louise Dylan (Harriet Smith in Emma) plays the role of the older, self-righteous sister just beautifully! I am personally drawn to a character who plays a good meanie or is at least a little gruff. There were several others I recognized as well and we had fun checking out in what other movies some of the cast were.  Love Was Near BookFor older girls there is a lovely companion book, Love Was Near. This is book provides a deeper look into what Reese was thinking and why she made the decisions she made throughout. This is for ladies ages 12 and up. I did not review this title, but several of my Crewmates did! Make sure you check out their reviews on it!   One more fabulous resource is a downloadable study guide for small groups or families to use to further explore the themes of the movie. While my husband and I did not delve into this, I was quite impressed. It is a lovely little printable booklet you could use with high school girls or a young adult small group with ease. I was also excited to see Scripture featured in this booklet. My favorite aspect of this movie is that you won’t find it to be in any way a preachy film. It is a great movie to share with friends who don’t know the Lord and may even lead into some discussions for you. I consider this a modern day parable in every way, and just as Christ used stories to tell truths from the Word, you will find ample opportunity to do the same with this tale of what really happens when someone tries to find themselves. At the same time those who are watching it won’t get the sense it is a move trying to convert them. I do however envision doors of opportunity opening wide for those who do view it with their unbelieving friends! Grace, redemption, and love flow throughout this lovely story. You won’t be disappointed.  Take a look at the trailer below!

Week in Review: July 10-14

I’m starting a new feature on the blog called For the Soul!

Well…we drove home from Florida on Monday. What a WONDERFUL time with family! We were able to spend a short amount of time with my husband’s grandmother as well. We love her so very much but her mind is fading with some form of dementia. The times we spend with her now are so precious for all of us.

The rest of the week was spent
1. unpacking and doing laundry
2. cleaning the house
3. catching up on reviews
4. catching up on scrapbooking
This morning we rewarded ourselves for our hard work all week with a field trip to the zoo. The girls had an adventure on the high ropes obstacle course! I was so proud of all of them, but especially Beth because she has a pretty strong fear of heights. They were so brave!

Next week will bring more regular school again. We won’t be at “full school” yet, but we will be learning!

For the Soul: I Married McGyver

Do you remember the guy from the 80s who could fix anything with…well…anything? His knowledge of physics and chemistry  paired with unconventional thinking always got him out of whatever corner he was backed into…as long as he had his Swiss army knife. My husband doesn’t own a Swiss army knife, but he does own several rolls of duct tape. With duct tape in hand my mild mannered minister man suddenly becomes McGyver. (The 1980s one…the humble one. Not a fan of these remakes!)
“Honey! Where is the duct tape?”
Those words honestly used to make me cringe…but with good reason.
Back when my husband was a bachelor waiting for me to graduate from college so we could marry, he furnished his home with what he could afford. He bought a couch, end tables, and a coffee table from I don’t know where. The couch was decent enough to begin with. The end tables and coffee tables looked to be matching gigantic spools with a Formica top. At the time I knew this would more than likely be our first home and I must confess I had a secret agenda to rid ourselves of those coffee tables as soon as I could!
The couch was under my radar…until I came to visit and was greeted with duct tape cushions. The seams had begun to split and he did what he could to make repairs on his own. It may not have been as bad if it had been one of the new pretty patterned kind instead of the old silver standby….okay…yes. It would still have been as bad.
As horrified as I was it was my first lesson in duct tape 101:
Duct Tape will hold anythingtogether.
Motherhood has taught me another lesson:
Things are going to break.
We have gone through countless ounces of wood glue, super glue, and hot glue and innumerable rolls of scotch tape, packaging tape, and…you guessed it…duct tape. Papers are torn, glass is shattered, and knick-knacks get knocked. Sometimes those things are fixable…sometimes not. Many objects in our home are sentimentally special to me….our wedding cake topper…an original painting created for us as a wedding gift…a music box I had when I was little…they are more than objects to me. They are moments in time, memories I desire to hold on to. Yet, I have learned not to be quite so heartbroken when something comes crashing down because they are things
I’ll admit it is not easy to hold my temper when the girls break something, but the consequences of treasuring my trinkets over my children are dire. They may be punished if their disobedience caused the calamity, but I make sure they know their punishment is for the disobedience, not breaking something. I never want my precious daughters to feel I have treasured objects over them.
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Make-a-State Activity (part of the Activity-Paks series) from Homeschool in the Woods: A TOS Crew Review

Home School in the Woods

Summertime  is always a great time for us to learn together. During our traditional year the girls each have their own, unique course of study, but summer provides ample opportunities for unit studies and group work. This summer we’ve had a chance to spend lots of time with family and the girls have especially enjoyed extra time with their cousins! My sister-in-law and her husband had a chance to getaway while we had a blast with their 5 kids. They are a fun group and when I told them we were going to spend a little time learning about Florida before we traveled together to see their grandparents they were game. I was excited to introduce both my girls and these five kiddos to the Make-a-State Activity, a part of the Activity-Paks series from Home School in the Woods.

When they realized this was “school” my girls were excited, but their cousins weren’t quite sure what to think. My nieces and nephews attend an amazing Private Christian School in their hometown and while they know a lot about homeschooling, they haven’t had the chance to try it themselves. While they were a little uncertain, I had every confidence they would love this project because we have loved every single experience we have had with Home School in the Woods!

Hands-On History Activity-Paks: Make-A-State

Hands-On History Activity-Paks: Make-A-State

As I mentioned above, we chose to work with Florida. The downloadable files are so beautifully crafted, but incredibly simple to print and use. The directions for Make-a-State Activity are clearly written so that anyone should be able to follow them. I would even be comfortable having a high school student use this curriculum to teach their younger siblings. Because we had been camping just before all of the kids came, I hadn’t had a chance to print ahead of time like I normally do. This was actually really a good thing for me because I saw first-hand just how print-and-go these projects really are! I typically prepare days in advance for things because that is how I feel comfortable. What I learned with this curriculum is I don’t have to do that if I don’t have time!

I had the oldest two girl with the younger 4, 2 for each of them. The middle two girls worked together. I got them all set and and handed each pair the information page for the state of Florida. The youngest kids were 5 and 7 and may have had some trouble reading this on their own, but with the help of an older cousin/sibling there wasn’t any trouble at all. Parents can easily step in and help younger kids or those who struggle with reading for this portion without taking away from the learning experience in any way. I then assigned each of the three groups different portions to read and discover. After finding out information like the state capital, population, destinations to visit, and agriculture they used the printable pages included to record, draw, and color all about what they learned.

After everyone was done the kids took turns sharing with each other what they learned and then attached them to our large poster board. This is intended to be a file folder project, which I would absolutely do if each of the kids were making their own. Because we were creating a group project I chose a slightly different way to feature their learning and it worked beautifully! Adapting this project in this very small way did not take away from their experience at all.

So now I know you are wondering how they all felt about it! My girls enjoyed it as always. They even asked if were going to get to do more states after our vacation to Florida. I assured them we were as well as spend some more time playing the Name That State game! I wasn’t surprised by their enthusiasm or that they enjoyed working on this even while they consider themselves “on vacation”.

So what about my nieces and nephews? Their response was to tell me they were going to ask their mom if they could be homeschooled! There isn’t much of a better recommendation than that! Some of their specific comments were, “I didn’t know learning could be fun like this!” and, “Do you guys get to do stuff like this all the time???”

The kids’ final project!

They also were so funny after we were done. One of the younger kids asked how long we were working. It was about 90 minutes or so for us to research, color, write, and share. He could not believe they had been working that steadily for that long! His response to that was, “Really??? I thought it was only 10 minutes!” To me, this is the indicator of engaging learning. When a child becomes so absorbed in what they are studying they lose track of time, we have a winner.

You may already be familiar with Home School in the Woods, but make sure you take some time to see some of the new learning opportunities they have available! In addition to the incredible Activity-Paks there are also amazing titles in the the Lap-Paks series and a wonderful and unique way to look at history with the Timeline Trio. This is also a great opportunity to let kids choose their own areas of study.

One new feature found at Home School in the Woods is the opportunity to purchase several of the individual activities found in the Paks alacarte! I absolutely love this because this will give me the opportunity to supplement our regular curriculum with projects as we need them. I’m so excited to explore this option further!

Preserving Memories: Week Of July 2

Not as much scrapping while on vacation, but I had a little time while we watched movies with the kids! I’ll be working on scanning in an abundance of my mother-in-laws photos today to repair and preserve. Probably some time in the pool will come first before the Florida heat gets to us!

Magical Scraps Galore Easter Freebie
Yup, that’s it! But vacation usually takes me away from scrapping and that is not a bad thing.

Week in Review July 3-7

We have joyed another week of vacation, this time in Florida with my in-laws and sister-in-law and her kids. We love spending time with them and this was a nice ending to our time away from home.
My 3 with 5 of their 7 cousins on the 4th of July
The most significant thing about this week was just how relaxed we all have been. It made my husband and I realize that while we have a very solid relationship, we need to be more intentional about relaxing together. I don’t mean in the same room doing different things, but choosing to be together in our down-time both physically and emotionally. We don’t have a 5-step plan or anything like that, but it is just a choice we are making. We do a really good job of finding relaxing things to do alone. He loves to golf. I love to scrapbook and read. Yet we have neglected the joys of down-time together. So that is our new goal for us.
This ends about 6 weeks of almost non-stop activity and travel for our little family. Next week brings reality, where we are busy and happy, but it should include a much calmer pace. I hope to squeeze in a couple of day trips this month and next, but I’m really looking forward to some more low-key moments.

Preserving Memories: June 6 – July 1

We were camping this week, so I didn’t have time to scrap, but I do have some pages that have been waiting for designers products to go live in the store so I could post them!
This first one is one of my favorite ever layouts! I’m rarely the subject of my scrapbook pages, but my husband and dad thought my photo taking was funny, so they took lots of pictures of me taking pictures! Ha!

This is from Grace’s season as an Upwards Cheerleader. She had soooo much fun!

And a fun trip to a small aquartium that is really very awesome!

Week in Review: June 26-30

This was our home for the first few days of this week! We camped with my husband’s family for 3 nights in Virginia. The weather was gorgeous even if the nights were a bit cold!
Full Disclosure: I’m not really a camper!
But since everyone else is, I go along and do my best to enjoy it, be thankful we have time to spend with them, and try really hard not to focus on the reasons I don’t really love camping. We made some great memories and the kids especially were able to spend some much needed time with their cousins!
Even though camping isn’t my favorite vacation, we did make a ton of memories and I have the pictures to prove it! I’ll be scrapbooking this fun trip soon!

Lightening Lit Grade 7 from Hewitt Homeschooling: A TOS Crew Review

Hewitt Homeschooling One of my greatest joys of learning is sharing my love of great literature with my daughters. Like most homeschooling moms, I have a large collection of wonderful literature available to my girls and we read all the time for school and pleasure. I was incredibly excited to have Rose review the Gr 7 Lightning Lit Set  from Hewitt Homeschooling. Rose was incredibly excited to get her hands on this as well!  My experience with middle school English curriculum is rather extensive. Before the girls came along I taught English to 7th and 8th graders at a private school. I’m now privileged to teach 7th and 8th grade homeschoolers at a local homeschool learning center. We have spent the elementary years of Rose’s schooling reading as much quality and classic literature as possible and discussing it throughout the reading. My teaching experience had lent itself to what some may consider a more informal approach. I was excited to see what Hewitt Homeschooing had to offer for middle school!   Lightning Literature and Composition Pack Grade 7   My first impression was great excitement about the literature titles chosen. With so many traditional schools choosing trendy and often inappropriate reading material for their students I am overjoyed when a company with such a high reputation chooses quality titles to study. I was especially excited about the book Stories and Poems for Extremely Intelligent Children of All Ages. The short stories and poems included in this book were many of the same I read when in grade school but are much harder to find in current literature books. They are true classics just as much as the novels are.

The workbooks which are included are incredible. As a teacher I have had the opportunity to create my own curriculum in both of my teaching settings. This follows much the same style as I use and is incredibly high quality. I love the consumable workbook format. They are clear to understand and they reflect many levels in Bloom’s Taxonomy, a guide teachers use to create activities and assessments which reflect various levels of understanding. Hewitt Homeschooling does an excellent job of hitting every level. I also love that there are fun pages worked in as well like crosswords puzzles and word searches. This company proves that learning can be so much fun!
Rose has very much enjoyed our study through literature once we started with this set. She loves that I can give her an assignment she can complete on her own. The teacher’s guide and answer key makes grading and evaluation incredibly easy. Literary elements are thoroughly covered and detailed. The English teacher side of me is incredibly impressed with just how well this is done. The mom side of me loves that my daughter is engaged and enjoying it!

Just like me, Rose adores Stories and Poems for Extremely Intelligent Children of All Ages. In fact, I couldn’t find it one day when I was gathering supplies for school and found her in her bed reading it! I knew she had been enjoying what had already been assigned, but I was honestly surprised to find she enjoyed it so much she was reading it on her own time, at her own initiative. The other way I know she loves this set is it is the first thing she wants to work on each school day. Based on her answers in the workbook I can tell she is not only enjoying the study, but she is understanding and retaining what she is learning.  Check out what my Crewmates had to say about the other levels from Hewitt Homeschooling!
